m4rest88 (216), Beverly Hills, California, USA Nov 30, 2008 Pours with a light amber hue that is pretty clear and sparkling. Head is large and light brown and is mostly diminishing with time.
Aroma is of molasses, grain, and lots of nuts!
Light hops with an average yeast note in the nose.
Other smells that are prominent are the dark fruits - plums, prunes, and dates.
Medium to the palate - oily texture. Lively carbonation.
Sweet beginning and a bitter ending on the flavor. Lots of nuts in the taste!!!!!!! JCastner (102), New York, USA Nov 29, 2008 Copper color with white head. Great aroma of caramel and fruit with some hop citrus. Taste is first of biting bitterness with some sweet malt at the front with harsh bitterness in the finish. Just too much. jujubeast6000 (768), Houston, Texas, USA Nov 29, 2008 Reviewed 11/22/2008 (bottle dated 2008):
Very cool red bottle. Warmed up a bit. Pours an amber brown colored body. Creamy small white head, diminishing. Clear body. Very hoppy aroma, malty. Sweet nutty smell, bitter. Smooth malty flavor. Nutty, with a hoppy aftertaste. Citrusy. good taste, carbonated. Slightly warming. badgerben (3584), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Nov 28, 2008 Courtesy of LawStudent09. Dark orange color with no head. Light citrus aroma. Moderately citrus taste. Strong caramel malt. Not much bitterness at all. GuilTTy (527), Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA Nov 28, 2008 Big red bottle from my craft beer enablers at Canal’s in Lawrenceville, NJ. Hazy amber pour supporting a tall light stone head. Very sweet caramel aroma. Initially very malty flavor with little more than caramel and toffey but much more complexity comes out as the beer warms even just a little. Silky texture and a medium long and mildly sweet finish. Not a world-beater but a still a really nice brew. Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Nov 28, 2008 On tap at HopCat, Grand Rapids. Translucent amber body, thin off-white head. Heavy, bready nose with spicy esters and alcohol. Heavy, dry body, with layered breads, yeast, and prickly alcohol. As the beer warmed, sweet berry-like notes developed. Bitter finish. The beer became more likable after half a pint. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 27, 2008 In short: A sugary sweet simple strong ale
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed fresh soon after purchase. Tasting session with Montreal crew
The look: Partly cloudy dark orange body topped by a short-lived off-white head
In long: Nose of sweet oranges. Taste is mainly crunchy crisp sugary, malt profile actually reminded me of fortune-cookies. The hops propose oranges and some coniferous notes but they are crushed by the excessive sugary sweetness. Rogue usually like hop (and over-hopped everything) but this beer felt like one of those Weyerbacher sweet alcoholised mess. I fail to see how this relates to the much superior regular Dead Guy. Rogue has packed a failed experiment in a fancy bottle and used the Dead Guy name for marketing, and it’s just wrong to take advantage the Dead Guy, except in Alabama when no sheep is available. taalhiker (179), Dayton, Ohio, USA Nov 27, 2008 From bottle. Pours clear copper with generous off-white head. The aroma includes spicy hops, caramel malt and faint citrus. Tastes medium bodied with roasted malts and generous hops. Decent beer but not worth the $8 tariff.
