Slacks (481), Bolton, Ontario, Canada Sep 4, 2009 Bottle: Pours a deep orange, very nice tan head resting atop. Aroma offers lots of citrus hops, caramelized sugars, hint of toasted malts. Flavour is great - peppery, hoppy, bready, some anise and lots of caramel sugary malts. Love it. DeadGirl (192), West Palm Beach, Florida, USA Sep 1, 2009 Updated: Oct 18, 2009Pour from the 750ml bottle into a pint glass: No kidding with the > 15 second finish. Rich mahogany in color, aroma of brown sugar and candy apples. Notes of caramel, roasted malts overwhelmed with raisins. The overall sweet taste is thick like that of a liquer, but the alcohol taste is everything like a barleywine. Drinkability: A pint is good enough for me due to it’s sweetness factor. Rebuy: I don’t think it’s worth it for a $12 bottle. #106 on 01092009, DG. Boutip (2334), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Aug 30, 2009 Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large frothy head with great retention and good lacing. Aroma is more geared toward sweet malt then hops as I was expecting. Taste is very reminiscent of an American barleywine with loads of cookie dough sweet malt with a bitter hoppy finish. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well done with an interesting balance between sweet malt and bitter hops. italarican (157), Astoria, New York, USA Aug 29, 2009 Tap at Ginger Man. Pours a clearish copper. Aroma of green caramel apple with some malt and raisin. Flavor matches the aroma and is pleasantly sweet. There’s minimal bitterness in the background. It’s clean and crisp with a gentle fizzy palate. Very well-balanced. beerbuzzmontreal (2909), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Aug 29, 2009 Pours a cloudy amber color with almost no head. The aroma is fruity and sweet, it feels like candied fruits. Flavor of malt, candied fruits and hops, there’s some bitterness in the end. The body is light and creamy while the carbonation is moderate. It has some interesting elements, but it lacks a little something to be better as a whole. williamherbert (461), Syracuse, New York, USA Aug 26, 2009 The color is a hazy copper-orange. Creamy pure white head. Big thick frosty lace on the sides. Clear but also hazy.
The smell is bready English ale malt. Tangy dark berries/fruits. Grape. FLoral and citrusy hops buried beneath. Dark sgars and dark barley. Really something else. Brandy as well as hints of mocha.
The taste is a major blast of alcohol. Roasted barley malts. Hops spicier in the taste than in the aroma. Raisins and leather. Dark flavors; lacquer-like. Rich and heavy. Barleywine-ish.
Oily and thick on the tongue. Chewy but not a choker. Has the strength of a barleywine. Severe. A sipper, but a good one. Strong and challenging. Very good, but will be hard to repeat. nqualls (1429), Nashville, Tennessee, USA Aug 26, 2009 Source:2009 bottle.
Glass:Snifter.
Appearance:Clear dark amber pour with a one finger off white head.
Aroma:Caramel and spices on the nose.
Flavor:Caramel base with brown sugar, spices and a resinous finish.
Palate:Full bodied with mild carbonation.
Overall:Not as bad as I thought. The original release was a disappointment, but the 2009 is very good.
