Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Draft at Uber. Can’t believe they’re serving such a huge beast in shaker pints. Well, lucky for us, I guess. Crystal clear ruddy dark amber. Dense and creamy--if thin--grayish head. Dense sheets of lace. Nice lightly fruity nose, especially after it has breathed and warmed for a while. Starts out with caramel and bread and then sharpens into fruit. Thickish, slightly creamy body (especially for a lagered beer). Orangey, orange pith-y, caramel, nuts, dates, toast. Nice complex mid-palate. Good resiny finish. Nicely done. Maybe a bit on the toasty/burny side for some, but it’s doppeled and still not as sweet as regular Dead Guy, which is nice.

Picked up at Bottleworks in Seattle only to find it locally a week later. Pours clear copper with two inch tan head. The aroma is moderate with solid hop notes of grapefruit and sweet malt enhanced orange and tangelo, some spicy hops and a bit of caramel malts. After a few tries this beer has grown on me. The taste if full with lightly roasted malts, sweeter malts mixing with grapefruit, orange and spice hops. By midway a medium roasted malt note grows and just manages to outshine the other hoppy flavor components. It gets just a bit caramelly into the after taste. Good stuff from Rogue but like the other similar releases the price hardly justifies another purchase.

On tap at the Portland Pub. Pours rich amber with a small off-white head. Malty nose, caramel and hops. Flavor had a lot more hops, big bitter finish. This really didn’t find the great qualities of dead guy for me, more bordering on IIPA then the malty goodness of dead guy.

Orange copper colored brew. Very fruity aroma. Flavor is sweet up front with some nice fruitiness, a little dry nuttiness and a good deal of alcohol. Finish is floral and earthy. Not too bitter, but it’s there. Too much alcohol in there for me.

Cool eye-catching bottle. Pours amber brown with a dense almond coloured head. Rich toffee malt and fruity bitter hop aroma. Big chewy palate of the same. In short, what I have come to expect from Rogue, which is to say very good quality and no skimping on the ingredients. If there is any criticism, it is that this doesn’t retain any especially "bockiness" reminiscent of the original Dead Guy, but who cares? It’s tasty!

Cool bottle. Kinda’ pricey. Nice amber-red color with a nice head to boot. Really enjoyed the palate (chewy and full of texture, yet not too heavy and/or syrupy). Complex malts took the stage (over the hops) by a small margin, and they offered notes of dark dough, multigrain bread, peanut shells, toffee, chocolate and a hint of black coffee. Hops were also nice, as they were full of fresh-cut grass, earthy herbs and dried flowers, along with some bitterness to round things out. Alcohol didn’t seem sharp at all. Enjoyable, tasty beer.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown. Clear deep copper body with a large creamy tan head with good retention. Sweet caramel and light toasty aroma with a huge hop kick. Sweet caramel, somewhat sugary flavor with lots of american hops. Still decidedly malt accentuated. Medium body with moderately high carbonation.

Draught: Aroma of floral hops, citrus, chocolate malts, some pine. Poured amber in color with a medium-sized, creamy, off-white head, that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Medium bitter flavor. Tastes of hops, pine, malts, and toffee. Medium body. Creamy texture. Average to lively carbonation. Bitter finish.
