Commercial Description:
JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue's classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU's approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

Pours orange copper with a minimal white head. The aroma comes across has a typical sweet malt bomb ADA with some earthy hops and alcohol. Medium body that is about like any other of this style. The taste is a disaster, just a complete mess. Overly sweet malt, taste is a bit watery, alcohol beats you over the head and the finish is lots of alcohol burn. This was incredibly disappointing.

2008 bottle - Pours amber with suspended yeast flakes and a sizable off-white head. It has a very malty aroma with hints of dark fruit. The flavor is sweet and malty up front with dark fruit and wood characteristics then the hops hits. It’s moderately to heavily hopped and has a bitter finish. It put me in mind of some barley wines.

Sampled on draft at Zeno’s in State College PA this beer poured a caramel-chestnut color with a large yellow-tan head. The aroma was sweet fruity and floral hops but not a whole lot else. The flavor was bitter floral hops with a tangy malt undertone followed by fruity hops and a hint of caramel. The finish was long and hoppy.

On tap at Rogue in Portland, OR--Poured a thin amber body with a tiny white head. Starts off smooth and unlocks a whirlwind of complexities. Sweet, malty, mad hoppy. Then finishes mellow again. Nicely constructed. A little boozy as it warms up, but overall, a great beer.

Red (but not ceramic) 750 bottle. Pours clear amber with a dense, thick off-white head. Sweet aroma of toffee and figs. Medium body, light carbonation. Taste of citrus, toffee, caramel, eventually wandering into pine. Earthy/floral bitter finish.

750ml bottle from BevMo Mission Valley. Pours a medium copper color with a good size off white head with good lacing. Nose was just like dead guy with a bit more malt and booze to it. Flavor was again dead guy ish (heavy malt and hop bitterness) with a booze kick. Not overly impressed with this....kick ass bottle though!

Crystal amber with lace-inducing frothy like a sea wave - head. Nose of caramelized brown sugar, wilted flowers, and spiced coffee cake. Flavors like oldspice sprayed hops slipping to bitter throat rubs. Burnt sugar, unripe citrus rind and a smidgen of subtle tangerine. Alcoholic afterthoughts with just a touch of caramelized sweetness behind.
