4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
One beer I always keep stocked by the case is Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale. Along with Troegs Trogenator, it’s an extremely flavorful moderate abv beer with a cheap enough price tag to serve by the bucket. So I had very high expectations for the Double Dead Guy Ale.
Short story - it delivers. It’s just like the dead guy ale, but more potent. Everything but the sweetness is taken up a notch. It’s beautifully bitter, laced with candied alcohol flavors and smells like a holiday. I can’t defend the price increase over the regular dead guy ale, but this beer is sure to find a regular rotation in my quaffing ensemble.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
750ml as gift, liberally shared around with good company. As XS Dead Guy, at 9%. Reddish light brown, quite a lot of visible carbonation and very little head. Caramel, freshly baked brioche, candied yams, naked alcoholism l in the aroma. Taste starts sweet as would be expected but there’s a pared-down hoppy bitterness in the latter half of the sip. Bitter cooking herbs, turpentine, toffee in the aftertaste which doesn’t work as well as I’d like. Full oily body without so much alcohol burn going down. Very enjoyable but as a ’big beer’ doesn’t quite have the best balance.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
750ml ceramic bottle at the Head of Steam, Durham. golden amber pour with a frothy off-white head. Creamy aroma of cereals and hops, along with more vibrant notes of blackcurrant and passion fruit. Thick mouthfeel, with flavours of stout cream, oak smoke, whiskey, and the lingering clean flavour of the air after a rainstorm.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750 ceramic bottle: 2008 vintage (hiding in the back of the refrigerator for quite a while.) This one pours a clear amber color. There was a fairly decent sized off-white head on it. Leaves a fair amount of lacing. It has a good nose. Grainy, roasted malts, fruits, toffee. The taste is very good. Some graininess, toffee, a bit of bitterness, some fruits in the background. A hint of spiciness also. A very nice brew. I need to check out a fresher bottle, but this was really nice.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
A 750ml ceramic and wingtop bottle with no bottled on or best by date. Poured into a Mikkeller pint glass. It poured a cloudy dark amber colour with a one finger off white head that dissipated fairly quickly but left some spotty lacing. Aromas of apple juice (very juicy), caramel, biscuit malt, grape and a hint of orange. Taste was quite similar with caramel malt sweetness, apple juice, tea, grape, raisins and dark berries. Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Overall this was ok. Not bad, but just ok. A little bit too caramel-ly sweet for my taste buds.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Draught at Watering Hole. Lots of caramel, malt, nuts, yeast, booze, finish is quite sweet. Feels quite heavy and messy, quite a disappointment compared to the solid classic version.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
Nose features big roasted malts with caramel, ripe dark berries, biscuit malt and alcohol. Rich copper colour with a well laced fluffy tan head. This is a beast of a beer. Rich roasted malt, toffee, fruity hops underneath , almonds and dark berries. The body texture is thick and rich. All elements are well integrated. A gem of an East Coast Imperial. None better.
