JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue’s classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU’s approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

One beer I always keep stocked by the case is Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale. Along with Troegs Trogenator, it’s an extremely flavorful moderate abv beer with a cheap enough price tag to serve by the bucket. So I had very high expectations for the Double Dead Guy Ale. Short story - it delivers. It’s just like the dead guy ale, but more potent. Everything but the sweetness is taken up a notch. It’s beautifully bitter, laced with candied alcohol flavors and smells like a holiday. I can’t defend the price increase over the regular dead guy ale, but this beer is sure to find a regular rotation in my quaffing ensemble.

750ml ceramic bottle at the Head of Steam, Durham. golden amber pour with a frothy off-white head. Creamy aroma of cereals and hops, along with more vibrant notes of blackcurrant and passion fruit. Thick mouthfeel, with flavours of stout cream, oak smoke, whiskey, and the lingering clean flavour of the air after a rainstorm.

750 ceramic bottle: 2008 vintage (hiding in the back of the refrigerator for quite a while.) This one pours a clear amber color. There was a fairly decent sized off-white head on it. Leaves a fair amount of lacing. It has a good nose. Grainy, roasted malts, fruits, toffee. The taste is very good. Some graininess, toffee, a bit of bitterness, some fruits in the background. A hint of spiciness also. A very nice brew. I need to check out a fresher bottle, but this was really nice.

A 750ml ceramic and wingtop bottle with no bottled on or best by date. Poured into a Mikkeller pint glass. It poured a cloudy dark amber colour with a one finger off white head that dissipated fairly quickly but left some spotty lacing. Aromas of apple juice (very juicy), caramel, biscuit malt, grape and a hint of orange. Taste was quite similar with caramel malt sweetness, apple juice, tea, grape, raisins and dark berries. Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Overall this was ok. Not bad, but just ok. A little bit too caramel-ly sweet for my taste buds.

Draught at Watering Hole. Lots of caramel, malt, nuts, yeast, booze, finish is quite sweet. Feels quite heavy and messy, quite a disappointment compared to the solid classic version.

Nose features big roasted malts with caramel, ripe dark berries, biscuit malt and alcohol. Rich copper colour with a well laced fluffy tan head. This is a beast of a beer. Rich roasted malt, toffee, fruity hops underneath , almonds and dark berries. The body texture is thick and rich. All elements are well integrated. A gem of an East Coast Imperial. None better.

2009. General ale smell with some hops. Taste is the same with a bit of malt. High carbonation, medium body, and mild foam.

Malty aroma with spicy and citrus hops in the background and quite a bit of fruity yeastiness. Palate begins with a big bracing bitterness... smooth maltiness and a little bit of toasted bread.. citric hops and a little bit of spice but the hop flavors are more in the background. It says 72 IBUs and I believe it... bitterness is a little out of whack but gets better as it warms and the malts start showing up more... subtle caramel and more toasted malt character... Definite but not bad alcohol and a lingering bitter and yeasty finish. Body is not as thick as I would have expected.. and I’m okay with that.. carbonation is fairly smooth... drinkability is much better as it warms.
