JLS Release #34: Double Dead Guy ~ initially released in kegs for JLS accounts, this new elixir will be launched in 750 ml ceramic bottles in the spring of 2008! D2 (our nickname for Double Dead Guy) is a new reincarnation of Rogue’s classic Dead Guy Ale. Mahogany in color, full bodied with an amazing mid-palette richness of toffee and caramel. The hops are evident also, with just enough to keep the maltiness in check. The finish lasts > 15 seconds!! D2 is Double the Fun! Malts: 2-row Pale, Munich, C15. Hops. Cascade for boil (because John was out pf Perle) and Crystal for aroma (because John was out of Sterling ...) IBU’s approx 50-60. 19.8 Plato Original Gravity, 4.9 Plato Terminal Gravity.

FROM NOTES: November 8, 2013. A: Heavy bready malt aroma and a nice caramel sweetness. Mixed with these are lighter aromas of a floral and herbal nature as well as a lighter citrus hop smell. Faint fig notes. A: Pours a hazy orange-red almost sunrise-like color with almost no head. T: Follows the nose, although not quite as sweet. Nice and malty with subdued spices and fruits with a nice hop bitterness to round everything off. Alcohol is well hidden. M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. O: Overall, a good heavy almost barley-wine like and bitter brew. If you like Dead Guy, you’ll undoubtedly like Double Dead Guy

750 ml bottle from STLWill- thanks again, Will! Opened in line at the Side Project Pulling Nails Blend #2 release, I know this one didn’t give me much cred but I tend to bring home beers for Thanksgiving that aren’t as sought after because my family doesn’t care either way and is just excited to try new things. But we made it through some other stuff that day without getting to this. So this 2008 vintage is what I had to share. And it’s a craft beer store staple that I’d never had, somehow. Pours a muddy amber-brown with a tiny beige ring for a head. Blindfolded, I’d have said "aged American strong ale," because this one had notes of cardboard, brown sugar, caramel, toast, and maybe some earth and tobacco. The body has thinned over the years but has some slight heft left, but not much carbonation. Not bad at all, really. Probably better fresh, but this was fine.

On tap at Rochester Tap Room. Clear orange / brown. Sort of had barley-esque character, but a bit better, as I hope for Strong. A bit more balance. Plenty of sweet though, and plenty of toffee. Sticky thick mouthfeel. Liked.

This is the XS version in the big dark bottle, vintaged 2013 that I have been recommended to put here. It’s a beautiful looking beer with its lush orange-amber colour and a thick cream coloured head. The aromas are of lush stonefruit predominantly: apricots and peaches galore with pears, nectarine and almonds. Thick and viscous with pinches of bitterness, I could have drunk more of this were it not for the fact it made me fall into blissful slumber.

Pours a finger of head on a dark straw colored body. The aroma is mild grain and honey. The taste is caramel and honey sweetness with a mild dry bitterness to balance it out. The texture is crisp but thicker. Really enjoyable.

I'm a fan of IPAs and I really sharp, sometimes bitter, high alcohol brews. This selection was very tasty. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

XS Dead Guy: The nose is honey, toasted nuts, some booze. Clear burnt orange, fully fading head. Some sweetness, pretty well balanced. Medium-full bodied, a little hot.

"big doughey, dopplebock nose, with some added hops. this beer is classified generically as a strong ale...more like a slightly hoppy dopplebock. complex taste, especially as it warms, but something is just a touch off. Very good, but there are excellent db’s (or strong ales) out there for much less. Glad we tried it though. Pours with a nice frothy head. Mahagony color, and a complex palate."

Limited release in a 22oz bottle. Stronger than most ales. Slightly sweet, not too hopsy. Goes down good. Seems unfiltered or like homemade.
