Bomber from Monument in Concord, CA. Pours quite black with a huge, foamy dark tan head. Smells like chocolate. Medium body plus with smooth carbonation. Flavor starts chocolate, then goes rather gritty, and almost smoky with coffee. It is much more bitter than not, and it has a really nifty mouthfeel in the finish. Wonder if I imagined the smoke. I think it’s pretty complex for a lager, and it drinks very easily. Bitter is starting to show up on the sides of my tongue, and other things are going on too. Good job from Rogue.

Bottle. Poured a black color with a large frothy brown head that was mostly lasting and produced excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted malt aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted bitter flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Standout drinkable brew.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2010 Bottle… Pitch black lager with a small, creamy, brown head. Great retention. The aroma is a foreboding blend of charcoal, dark chocolate and espresso sludge with peripheral notes of vanilla and cola. Full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is well-balanced, burnt and acrid with lots of espresso. Crisp, singed, dry finish. Kudos to glennmastrange for sharing the bottle!

Bottle at first DC tasting of 2010. Black with an attractive dark brown head. Aroma of motor oil, cinnamon and burnt espresso. Flavor has lots of roasted malts, a background of smoke and ash, and a finish of burnt coffee. More body than your average schwarzbier. Complex and interesting.

Tap (CWAF2013, Sat)
Rich roasty aroma, a touch of coffee. Thick and smooth in the mouth, maybe oily. Brown tight head. Very rich and also highly drinkable. So full and flavoursome it comes over as a great US porter, rather than a great US schwarz. Pleasant hops give it some bite too. Yum.

SBWF 2012. Pitch black beer with a brown head. Chocolate aroma, cocoa, roasted, bready, peat, vanilla, hay, toffee notes, some pepper. Tar flavor, peat, hay, dark chocolate, roasted, figs, woody notes, ash, dry. Really pleasant. A schwarzbier with porter like flavors. Really good.
