A deep deep dark lager with a thick frothy dark brown head. In aroma, interesting mix of soy sauce, chocolate malt, caramel, quite nice. In mouth, a nice sweetish chocolate with peated notes, coffee grind, lightly smoked, quite nice. Bomber.

Rich roasty aroma, a touch of coffee. Thick and smooth in the mouth, maybe oily. Brown tight head. Very rich and also highly drinkable. So full and flavoursome it comes over as a great US porter, rather than a great US schwarz. Pleasant hops give it some bite too. Yum.

Bottle shared by jbye4334. Pours opaque with a moderate, brown, frothy head. Aroma is moderate dark malt, dark chocolate bitterness, smoke, oak, and light fruity esters with some dark fruit (prunes, raisins). Flavor is moderate dark malt with dark chocolate, prunes, oak, smoke, raisins, and bitter hops. Full bodied, smooth texture, and high carbonation.

22 ounce bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours black with a very dark brown medium sized dense creamy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of chocolate, chocolate, cocoa, more chocolate, roasted malts, bitter leaf and citrus hop finish. Taste is chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, leafy hops and a bit of a lactic note. Medium bodied and quite smooth. This is a hit. As much as I can’t stand Rogue the company, their beer is starting to win me over. Slowly.

from Erzbierschof - black beer with a little dark beige foam left; solid roasted maltiness, almost smokey with notes of coffee and chocolate, hints of hazelnuts, a good malt backbone, tasty and gently bitter; dry and roasted aftertaste of black chocolate and black cherries

Ins Glas ergießt sich ein schwarzes Bier mit schöner braunen Schaumkrone. Geruch sehr röstmalzig, Kaffee, Schokolade, Vanille. Geschmack schokoladig, röstmalzig, Kaffee, minimal rauchig, sehr gut!

Chopp. Black colour, small nice light brown head, good lacing. Roasted malt indeed in the sweet like aroma with chocolate, coffee and dark fruits. Good mouthfeel. So pleasant a roasted maltiness in the sweet flavour along with chocolate, dark fruits, licorice and a good roasty bitterness in the finish.

Black pour with a nice creamy tan head. Aroma is full of roasted malt and coffee. Some bits if bitter chocolate too. Flavor is loaded with coffee and bitter chocolate. This is really well done.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2010 Bottle… Pitch black lager with a small, creamy, brown head. Great retention. The aroma is a foreboding blend of charcoal, dark chocolate and espresso sludge with peripheral notes of vanilla and cola. Full-bodied with lively carbonation. The flavor is well-balanced, burnt and acrid with lots of espresso. Crisp, singed, dry finish. Kudos to glennmastrange for sharing the bottle!
