4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
[A] Almost smells like a stout, for being listed as a shwarz. With coffee, chocolate, roast. Smoke comes through very light. Burnt. Back to back with Point 2012. Lager yeast somewhat buried. [A] Very oily, thick, impressive looking black pour. Beautiful frothy brown head. Stout-like in this department. Appealing.
[F] Chocolatey. Rosy. Roasty. Some meaty, fiery, hammy smokiness. Char. Bitter. Alot moreso than the 2012. Earthy. Flavorful. [P] Extremely drinkable. Thin. Nice tingle. Everything comes together well. The hop varieties don’t really loan any citrus or extreme bitter. [O] Very very nice beer. Liked this one. Not the most complex brew I’ve ever had, but quite excellent. $4 is a steal for this. Just. Totally impressed. Rogue does a good brew, but I don’t often repeat. Will have to buy another few while they’re available. Especially with estate-grown ingredients. Homegrown. Yum.

Muito boa. Um pouco ácida mas equilibra com o amargor e o saber torrado de malte. Surpreendeu o creme muito alto e muuuuito persistente.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz bottle shared by Tmoney99 years ago from notes. Pours a dark cola brown color with a small tan head. The aroma had roasted malts, coffee, earthy hops, and some orange citrus in the background. The flavor had earthy and citrusy hops, roasted malts, coffee, and dark chocolate. Medium bodied with good flavor; one of the better beers I’ve had from Rogue in a while although I probably wouldn’t revisit this.

On draft. Rich black with thick tan head and strong lacing. Medium body with roasty coffee bean palate. Not sweet, not sour, a little bitter on the finish, from the coffee. Decent.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
650 ml bottle served in a pint glass (from notes).
Pour looks a bit like used motor oil; this is a truly black beer. Completely opaque with an unusually dark brown head that reduces at a moderate rate to a thin ring.
Aroma: Not strong. Primary component is dark roasted malt. Very sweet, with lots of chocolate/smoky notes. Toasted malt and burnt toast, powdery cocoa, hints of coffee, and molasses.
T - Some sweetness initially, but certainly not as sweet as a typical German schwarzbier, and the finish is mildly bitter with a clear coffee note. Hints of dark chocolate and licorice. Mainly, there’s plenty of rich dark roasted malt flavor that is pronounced and lasting but not challenging.
M - nice medium-full body with some crispness from carbonation and/or hops.
O - recommended for fans of schwarzbier who also like an imperial stout: This schwarzbier heads in that direction.

"a good looking dark, thick black lager. you wouldn’t know it’s only 5% from the flavor. full flavored roasty goodness. not good enough to eclipse the style but chocolate, roasted malt, and a hint of bitter hops make this a tasty edition to the Rogue family."
