3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Rogue Hop Farms in Independence, OR on 1 June 2013.
Poured a dark, near black colour with a halo of brown head. Big aroma of dark roasted coffee beans, burnt grains and a little pine hop. Roasted malt flavours with some bitter, dark chocolate and a little sharp, unripened fruit. Nice rounded espresso bitterness on the palate.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Was not sure how to classify this. Poured black with white head, looked like a CDA. Aroma was bit of hop and coffee. Flavour was roast malt and coffee with a tinge of coffee in the finish. This is NOT a porter, NOT a stout but is an interesting experiment from Rogue worth trying. And the yeast does NOT come from the fur of Brewer the dog.

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draft at Rogue in Newport. Dark brown with a small tan head. Coffee aroma bleeds over into a strange basement mold / pungent mold spore territory. My lady friend disagreed about the mold spores, and found the aroma more straightforward as cold press coffee, but on this day we did have a lot of differences in our perceptions of beer. So the cold coffee character is there, but it’s overpowered by the basement mold and wet paint notes, and there grows some cigarette ash (which she noticed as well, so I’m not totally nuts). Medium body, sweet dark caramel malt core with light roast and some faint black patent char. Malty and sweet and chewy. Nice flavor which does not contain the same mold and paint as the aroma, and the body is firm and works well for the sweetness and low bitterness.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Thick black color with thin tan lacing. Medium coffee aroma. Great coffee palate without the bitterness. Smooth and semi-sweet. Rainy days...bring it.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sample at Rogue Ales Distillery & Public House. The beer is a very dark brown color with a medium thin light beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing on the glass. The aroma is roasty indeed, with notes of malt and coffee. Light-bodied with a roast coffee character and notes of chocolate malt and mild hops. The finish is sweet with a toasted malt aftertaste. Decent overall.
