Dedicated to Crustaceans
The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

UPDATED: MAY 21, 2014 I was very intrigued by this bottle given my fondness for Old Crustacean. But this just didn’t have anything special. Was it a good barleywine? Nope. Was it a good double IPA? Nope. Just a mediocre combination of both. I love the idea, but better luck next time with the end product Rogue.

750ml. Pours a cloudy amber with a thine white head that lasts. Taste is of malt, caramel, hops, pine, citrus, grapefruit, spice, resin and fruit. Similar aroma. Has a full body with a slight dry and warming finish. Easy to drink for a higher ABV beer, but quite enjoyable.

Pours a cloudy golden color with a light head. Notes of apple, and a little hops. Flavor is barleywine upfront, with the hoppiness of the DIPA in the aftertaste and backend. Little bit of alcohol note afterwards. Overall an interesting "beer", worth giving a shot.

Cloudy orange pour. No head or lacing. Aroma is citrus. Taste is bitter followed by a malty backbone. Strong bitter grapefruit notes and a bit of orange. Strong yet smooth. Very thick palate for style. Overall decent.

Bottle, poured amber color with medium head and lacing. Notes are sweet malt, hops, peach, and booze. Tons of bitterness in this barleywine. Hard to get down 6 ounces of this one.

1 pint 9oz bomber. Tasted on 4/29/14. Bottle from Moore Liquor. The beer pours to a dark golden color with a tick white head. The aroma has a sweet smell, malty not really a barley wine but hard to describe. The taste has a slight bitter upfront followed by a pretty dry finish. Not too sweet not real bitter either. The taste is a mix of a barley wine, lager & IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle: Clear and brassy orange with off white head. Smells of orange blossom, pine, caramel, alcohol. Syrupy, sweet, twangy, bitter... Not quite a barley wine. I would say closer to IIPA. I have to say I didn’t let this age for any amount of time. I found a solid caramel body along side prominent hoppy citrus rind bitterness. Delicious.

22, ridiculous blue bottle. Pours a murky medium amber with a dense and creamy off white head. Lots of caramel and tangy sweet oranges and pine and grapefruit on the nose. Thick body, not sticky, but almost. Dense toasty caramel with oranges and grapefruit on the mid palate, with a long hop sweet and malt sweet finish. This is pretty damn good.
