The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

I'm very impressed with this beer but despite its DIPA label the real flavor comes from the malts. Rich with bread like quality, earthy and mild floral. Strong but it's hidden. A true beer drinkers beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. Pours a rather cloudy brownish orange color with a smallish off-white head on there. Nose has a bit of hoppiness to it, but is quite faded, and some strong caramel notes to it. Taste is moderately bitter, but balanced out by an underlying sweetness that ends up being quite warming. I feel like I should drink this in front of a fire.

Tap. Pours a slightly hazy golden with a ring of off white head. Taste and aroma of bitter hops, malts, slight hint of caramel.

Draught at the Rogue Taproom, Portland, OR. Cloudy golden colour with a tiny off-white head. Sweet malt, grassy and fruity hops, mild bitterness and sweet malty notes in the aroma. The flavour is super strong... sweet malt, bitter hops and some alcohol. Resiny hops really... and sweetness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a murky straw colour. Aromas are sweet malts and corn syrup. Flavours are mostly bitter. Very hoppy barleywine. But a very good one.

On tap at Rogue in SF. Pleasant juicy citrus aroma. Hoppy, but not enough to disguise that this is a barley wine and not an imperial ipa. Sweet malty taste with resiny hops. Tasty.

It's got a syrupy texture and a nice bite to it. Very fruity and flavoursome. "IPA kinda" is right - it was pretty damn bitter, but the rogue boys covered it really well.

Good malt to hop balance. Nice amber and ruby pour with a thick, lacy beige head. The nose has tons of citrus and zesty hop notes. Light pine resin. Heavy caramel and biscuity crystal malts. Nice heavy mouthfeel with a bitter, dry finish. Overall a bit of a mess but delicious.

Bottled. Pours Deep golden with a smalll off-white head. Aroma of tangarine, lime, caramel and orange zest. Sweet flavor that ends up more dry and bitter. Medium bodied, oily texture and soft carbonation. An excellent sweet DIPA.

Bottle - hazy gold with slim white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, citrus hops. Early taste is barley wine, malts, caramel, then some hoppy IPA elements make themselves known. Barley wine sweetness through out, some late bitterness. Full bodied, low carbonation, warming alcohol. I think the barley wine classification is just about correct. Good stuff.
