The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

Bottle. Hop Hideout, Sheffield. 11.6%. Hazy, dark gold. Messy, filmy, bubbly, white head. Very fruity, strawberry, ripe tomato, nectarine goodness. Some vanilla infused white chocolate. Really unusual, and completely delicious aroma. Taste is white chocolate sweet, turning spicy dry, and spicy bitter. Palate is soft, airy, chewy, and boozy, although not the tune of 11 odd percent. Finishes long, rich, spicy vanilla custard, get it down your neck, chewy bitter. Lovely. Loads going on. Love that ripe tomato thing. Smells fantastic.

Poured into a Rogue shaker. Light amber color with a mild cream colored head that dissipates. Aroma is very citrusy with some resinous hops. Flavor is more complex than the aroma suggests. Caramel malt notes along with a bunch of citrus, resinous hops, some alcohol, and some faint dark fruit notes. Barleywine + IPA makes sense! Interesting palate - thick, oily, sticky, and a touch fizzy, and it all works in beautiful harmony! This thing really is a mix of everything. Overall this is quite good and very drinkable for the ABV. I think Rogue may have pioneered a new category IIPA’s and DIPA’s move over, Barleywineish Imperial IPA sortas are set to take over as the next big trend!

From a bottle. Thanks Joe and Kaile. Pours opaque apricot gold with a bubbly beige head and nice lacing. Tastes like caramel, grapefruit hops, booze, orange, and a bit of spiciness. Medium body and low carbonation. Smells like citrus hops, caramel, booze, orange and floral.

Bottle. Pours hazy golden orange with creamy off-white head. Aroma is bready malts, tangerine, floral and spicy hops, and light booze. Flavor is dry and malty up front with great hop bitterness, some grassiness, and some spicy alcohol notes. Medium/full body and medium carbonation.

Strong orange, fruity smell. Less barleywine and stronger IPA taste than I expected. Fruit, sweet boozy fermented fruit (12% ABV!), citric resinous bitterness. Body is fizzy but has slickness and heft. A big beer but more drinkable than I thought this would be.

Bottle from Brewcraft at Alexis'. Intense orange pour. Zesty orange, very boozy aroma, very barley wine-ish. Taste is similarly boozy - very boozy, very malty, pretty hoppy too. Huge flavor. Good to sip. Rich palate. Makes me want to try more hoppy barley wines but not super drinkable.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy dark golden orange with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is fruity piney hops with some caramel malt and some alcohol.

The flavor is sweet fruity caramel malt with lots of resiny piney hops and some harsh fusel alcohol in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, nice fruit and hops but the harsh alcohol is a bit overbearing.

Pours golden yellow with significant chill haze. Although this works for the beer - it appears as if it's glowing from inside the glass. Aroma of figs, citrus, cereal, apricot jelly. Taste is malt forward then a burst of citrus in the middle, followed by candy sugar sweetness and dried fruit. Finish is just like an apricot fruit roll up. Overall decent. A little confused on its style - as intended, I guess. I would love to try a soured or Brett version of this beer! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
