The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

UPDATED: MAY 31, 2014 Clear dark straw color. Drinkable barley wine...at first. Bounces between alcohol and bitterness. Kind of a pale bareywine, but hot. ..... starts off as an ipa ends as a barley wine.

First off, old crustacean is one of my favorites. Pours a medium golden-copper with thin, white head. Aroma is dank and rough. Flavor is more of the same. Hops are newer varietal with more motor oil than citrus and soapy. Love the fact that they realize most big Ipas could be hoppy barlewines...like 90 minute which is more barley wine than IIPA. Hog heaven when fresh is a better DIPA than most...Beer for though, but I like the concept of this beer

On tap, JL Beers Moorhead. Murky burnt orange pour with a thick, dense white head. Aroma is some citrus and tropical fruit, but very malty, a bit of toffee. Flavour is rich sweet toffee, but with some citrus and other fruity hops cutting through. Pretty tasty, but maybe a bit too much going on. Low carbonation. Huge.

75cl bottle @ Shrewsbury Beer Share, Sep 15, many thanks to Simon. Pours hazy orange with foamy white head. Aroma of marzipan. Initial pithy blood orange merging with a strong boozy sticky sweet resin. Sure it’s juicy but just far too hoppy to be palatable.

This is a well-described beer. High bitterness and high sweetness. A little fig - like fruit rounds out the malt.

Bomber, shared between five at the 16th Sep 2015 Shrewsbury Bottle Exchange Group meeting: cheers Simon for this offering. Heavy alcohol feel throughout this tropical fruit flavoured monster, I liked it from the first sniff and lick. Mini haze to the golden amber pour, wispy topping. Hops first and foremost in both the nose and taste, the malts not far behind in this semi-sweet style mixture. I do not like Pigeon Holing beers anyway, so I had no problem with this hybrid brew.

In between styles usually don’t work. Here’s a perfect example. Poured a dark orange with a small off white head. Aroma was of caramel, grapefruity hops and booze. Flavor similar, too sweet to be a good ipa, too bitter to be a classic barleywine. Cloying and a mess.
