The name sort of says it all. John Maier, our Brewmaster, wanted to create a beer that defied traditional style definitions. The result was a remarkably hoppy yet balanced and malty ale that quickly became a cult favorite in our Newport brewpub. But what was it? It was not quite a barley wine and not quite a double or imperial IPA. Who really cares about putting beers into narrow categories? Great beer is great beer - just drink it and enjoy!

On tap at Rogue, San Francisco. An unclear, orange colored beer with a thin, dense off-white head. Mostly hoppy aroma, but with malty sugars. Orange peel, pine cones and some tropical fruit notes. A touch of alcohol too. Rather warming in the mouth, full-bodied and soft. The flavor is a bit sweet I think, but nice the bitterness brings some sort of balance. Lasting bitter finish with tropical fruits and sweetness. Nice, but too sweet. 130805

Capped wild 750 from BevMo in Folsom, CA. Pours hazy gold with a foamy white head. Aroma of cooked caramel with some mixed hop notes. Full bodied or more. Flavor is lightish caramel with a hop burn (unless itís alcohol, but I donít think so), and toffee, fruit, damn near anything but citrus. This is fantastic. Better than that. Loving it.

Bomber poured a clear tarnished gold with a lasting off white head. Aromas of biscuit, earthiness, grapefruit zest, pine and light dankness. Palate was full bodied and smooth with a dry finish. Flavors of biscuit, earthiness, grapefruit zest, light pine and light dankness with a smooth dry lingering bitter finish. I would have put it more in the Imperial IPA catagory.

A big beer. Aroma of aged barleywine, and hops. The hop bitterness was subordinate to the big barleywine. still very drinkable.

Pours hazy deep golden with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, citrus, alcohol and grape. Taste is heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long sweet, warm, caramel and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

Draft at Rogue in Newport. Hazed gold body with a fine white head. Beautiful glowing, rich-colored appearance. Straight up pineapple juice tropical fruit aroma, very phenolic and spicy. Lots of pure orange juice pulp with a thick and chewy and sweet body balanced by a lot of bright citrus acids. Full bodied with warming alcohol. Seems I exhale fumes but it still seems just short of what I call "boozy". Rich, sweet and bitter but the yeast saves it - provides a nice roundness and fullness. Maybe the closest beer to Gšnstaller Ocator in terms of tropical fruit / pineapple expression, funny enough.

On tap at Rogue Brewers on the Bay, pours a cloudy golden orange with a small beige head. Aroma brings out notes of resinous hops, caramel malt, toffee, and a slight tropical fruitiness. Flavour is definitely a solid hybrid between IIPA and barley wine, perhaps slightly more so qualifying as barley wine with a lot of hoppy bitterness - with notes of toffee, caramel, and truckloads of resinous hops. Very well-balanced and blended. Solid stuff, drinkable in small amounts.

Bottle, shared with Parksy and Grippitis. Surprisingly light golden body, with a white foamy cap. Aroma is white grapefruit and metal shavings with boozy undertones. The palate opens with a wave of metal and pineapple, then surges into an acrid, aspirin-like bitterness. The finish is astringently dry with a residue of metal and an alcoholic warmth. I did not care for this the more I drank, but Grippitis didnít mind it. Parksy was somewhere in between.

UPDATED: APR 8, 2014 Big blue bottle pours with a gold to copper body that has some haze to it and supports an off white head. The modest aroma offers up floral hops, soap, malt sweetened lime peel, a slight tropical fruit hoppiness and then a good dose of booze on the back end of the draw. The taste begins bitter with bitter tangerine and lime citrus hops that pulse with resiny bitterness and some malt sweetness. To midway it picks up floral hops and a soapy sensation that doesnít come across that great. Overall the hops arenít really working for me and it is boozy and rougher than a barleywine needs to be. At this point Iíll take the yummy original over this.
