Formerly Chatoe Rogue Pumpkin Patch Ale.

The newest addition to the Chatoe Rogue series is Pumpkin Patch Ale, a beer made using fresh pumpkins grown in a patch that borders Rogue’s 42 acre hop yard. The pumpkins are picked, loaded into Rogue’s farm truck, driven immediately 77 miles to our brewery in Newport, quickly roasted, and pitched into the brew kettle to create a batch of Pumpkin Patch Ale.

750 mL bottle. Purchased a year ago, labelled as "Chatoe Rogue First Growth Pumpkin Patch Ale". Pours a deep caramel color with a little red color on the edges. Light tan head, 3/4" slowly settles to a film covering the beer. Aroma is mostly spices - cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves - standard pumpkin ale spices but not overpowering like others. Malt aroma in the background. Medium-full body, taste carries on with the spices but again, they’re not overpowering the malt, it’s very nicely balanced. The finish takes a turn - I get a little coffee, some light toasted notes and its a little dry too. Very good, glad I held on to this one!

Pours deep mahogany with a medium off-white head. Smell is pumpkin with some gentle spice notes. Taste is pumpkin, hints of caramel, and a tiny touch of spice. Medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly wet texture and mildly prickly mouth-carbonation, Chatoe Rogue Pumpkin Patch Ale finishes with pumpkin dominance.

750mL orange bottle pours clear copper with a tannish head of foam. The aroma is a pleasing earthy pumpkin note followed by a modest degree of cinnamon and nutmeg before the end of the draw brings on more smooth sweet pumpkin. The taste is fairly rich with earthy pumpkin followed by complimentary notes of cinnamon and nutmeg that are at a level where they’re letting you know they’re there but allow the pumpkin to be the main flavor player.

Wowza!! This one is pumpkin pie in a bottle. So delicious and not overly sweet. The pumpkin really comes through and the spice profile is spot on for my taste. The best pumpkin ale I’ve had yet (most of the time I don’t even bother to rate these).

Pours clear, dark amber. Tan, foamy head. Strong pumpkin aroma, hint of molasses and cinnamon. Pumpkin forward taste, with notes of pie crust, a hint of spice. Medium body, with a slick, almost film-like texture. Soft carbonation. Light, lingering spice finish. I find this to have an excellent balance between the pumpkin and spice notes, enough to complement each other without overwhelming. Pretty pleased with this one.

Nice vegetal pumpkin aroma with a slight bit of spice and wood. Crystal clear medium amber/orange color with a small but foamy white head. The aromas follow directly into the flavor, but the pumpkin comes out fully with a delicious flavor that’s fresh, not cooked. The spices are right there but in perfect balance and strength with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Body is thin, maybe a bit watery, but it seems about right for this beer which without the pumpkin/spice would be a nice amber ale. The spices and pumpkin swirl around and finish out cleanly with lasting tastes of both. Light, well balanced and tasty, this is one of the best pumpkin ales I’ve had.

22 ounce bottle - $8.99 at Sherlock’s in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours out a hazy, rich amber-hued body with a frothy, foaming, off-white head.

Smell: Smells of a moist well-spiced bread blended with oven-roasted pumpkin meats with a little bit of caramel and additional fruitiness.

Taste: Gritty, toasty baked homemade pumpkin bread with a slight, sweetish caramel edge to it. It has a nice blend of spices without this spice or that spice overshadowing the others (or the pumpkin). Standard Rogue house yeastiness. Slight bitterness aided by the spice character. Finishes out with more spice, but not too much spice, the roasty pumpkin, and some of that vanilla finally making an (albeit mild) appearance.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Has a smooth mouthfeel, but also a slight prickliness from the suds.

Overall: A half step above the average pumpkin ale, though at nearly two steps beyond the average pumpkin ale in price.
