Bottle. Beautiful hazy amber with a red-orange hue and a thick, lasting beige head that leaves sheets and sheets of lace all the way down the glass. Initial aroma is actually a little stinky, then more bready grain and lightly spicy citrus. The palate showcases the spiciness of rye malt perhaps better than any other rye beer I’ve had; really lovely malt profile, smooth, with just the faintest smokiness, and a light kiss of hops. Paired perfectly with our spicy dinner of pho.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy/creamy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted grain, cookie), moderately hoppy (herbs/grass, resin, apricot), with notes of black tea, autumn leaves and tree bark, medicine/Listerine/sage, earth. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, syrupy/gooey/creamy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly alcoholic, metallic. One of the weirdest mouthfeels of any beer I’ve ever encountered...it’s almost like syrup (but thankfully carbonated), very thick and goopy. Combined with the metallic aftertaste, I must say it’s pretty unpleasant. The aroma is interesting and autumnal, but there is a medicinal twang I’m not very fond of...but good for the most part. Nice lasting head, fairly good flavor balance. Hard to get past the strange gooey mouthfeel, though, so in the end, sadly, it’s pretty much undrinkable.

Bottle:   Deep brown, large foamy tannish head, nice lacing.   Pale bready nose, slightly sweaty, pale hops.   Flat maltiness on the tongue, albeit smooth.   Not a lot about this is bright.   Trouble getting any Rye out of it.   Slight Rye as it warms, but its minor.   Body and mouthfeel are rather smooth.   Soft rye and hops as it finishes, malty, slight sweet, with a soft hop bite.   Good, but nothing special.   Was hoping for more Rye.

Bottle from Total Wine, Sacramento. Pours dark brown with a rich beige head and a roasted chocolate aroma. There is a hearty rye malt flavor with bitter smoky finish.

Small beige head. Deep red body with light carbonation. Roasty earthy banana aroma with licorice and blackberry notes. Taste much the same with spice notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish spicy rye and banana aftertaste with bubblegum and wood notes. Unusual and interesting. (0.2l draft at Crow Bar, Oslo.)

2/10/13. 22oz bottle from Grassroots Natural Market. Lightly hazed brown pour, deep reds under the light, with a 3-finger, thick khaki head that cuts in half but laces significantly. Very bready aroma, quite malty, with a wisp of smoke, caramel, rye, and something that reminds me of a smooth lager. Malty entry with a touch of acidity, sweetness, rye, caramel, and again something that almost reminds me of a dark Mexican or Vienna lager. Not bad.

If I could give 10 points for appearance, this would get it. Lovely deep red/brown. Pronounced rye character, quite similar to an oaked altbier. Wood-like finish. Pleasant, balanced, very drinkable. (On tap at Crowbar, Oslo)

Tap at Happy Gnome. Murky amber pour with a white head. Pretty bland and thin overall - a little rye in here but otherwise kind of empty. Not bad, just not interesting.
