Not a fan. Pours murky red/brown with a gray/tan head. Aroma is earthy/skunky. Taste is really off. Wet cardboard comes to mind. Finishes slightly fruity.

Odd ball. The aroma is superb. It would rate an easy eight if it were just a bit stronger. Bread, caramel, hay, cereal, coffee, nuts, all are present. Resin. Yeast is dough, barnyard, basement aromas, leaves. Banana, butterscotch, clove, cooked vegetables, licorice, raisin, vanilla... Fuck it.... Aroma is an eight. It pours a gorgeous copper brown/black with a nice tan/off white head. Really impressive. It tastes good but way weighted to sour... a downfall. Palate is smooth, standard, and slick but with stinging lingering bitter. Sight and smell are top tier but consumption doesn’t live up to expectations. Glad I tried it. Would drink again. Would not buy again.

ARH (563) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - OCT 21, 2014
On tap, poured into a sampler glass. The aroma is heavy with rye bread and not much else. It’s a dark, clear, orange brown color with a thick white head and cloudy surface that leaves behind an abundant dense, web lace. The taste is a balanced blend of medium sweet and bitter. The thin textured beer has a soft, creamy carbonation. The medium body is a rich, toasted rye flavor that finishes clean and crisp with a light touch of citrus.

Transfer from BA review on 12-31-13- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a copper brown color with a tiny brown head. The head has a good level of retention slowly fading to leave a good level of streaky lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma is heaviest of a rye bread smell mixed with some sweeter aromas of caramel and a bit of toffee. Along with these aromas were some spice aromas and a bit of a bready smell. Taste – The taste begins with a rye bread flavor mixed with a little bit of caramel and toffee sweetness. The sweetness fades as the taste advances with the rye flavors getting even more potent. As the rye grows stronger some hoppy flavors of a grassy and pine nature greet the tongue. The flavors start out weaker and grow stronger toward the end, where they are joined by a light bit of earth and a resurgence of the caramel and toffee, leaving a lightly sweetened and hopped rye bread flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the average side in its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is rather average. Both are quite appropriate for the rye flavors of the brew and when mixed with the lighter hop and sweeter flavors make for an easy drinking feel. Overall – A tasty and easy drinking rye that is a little more on the mild hop side. Quite enjoyable.

Bottle at Zoo Brew. Pours a clear deep amber with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a lot of rye and a smoked meat note with a bit of sweetness underlying. Flavor has rye and smoked throughout with a touch of bitterness in the finish.

"A very spicy dry rye brew, almost overly so. Muddled kinda ugly pour. Beyond that there was some non descript hops and muddled malts, but as much as I like rye beer I wasn’t too impressed with this one. It was ok."

650 ml. Lightly cloudy dark brown with a lasting film of bubbles. Nose is dark toasted bread, chocolate and molasses. Tastes of dark toast, sourish molasses, spicy rye and touches of smoke and citrus. Medium body has medium carbonation and is to the sweet side.

Sample at Daily Growler Powell. Cloudy brownish-amber color with a thin light beige head that recedes quickly to an outer ring. Spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, fruit and rye. Medium body with flavors of grainy malt, spicy rye and earthy hops. The finish is subtly smoky with a rye malt aftertaste. Decent overall.

Visual: Pours nutty root beer brown with smallish foamy head, a very thin layer of micro retention, some decent lacing, some varied speed streams. Nose: light brown sugar malts, smells like a brune (lvl-4)-pungency Attack: very biting crisp, yeasty sourness Mid-palate: background hopped sourness, (lvl-5)-sweetness, (MAIN) brown sugar malts, caramel, bready, yeasty Finish: hint of quick spiciness,, smooth-crisp mouthfeel malty off-dry soft hopped bitter finish. Summary: Very drinkable especially while still cold. Overall good body, mouthfeel, and flavour. Forgettable but not regrettable.

Pint at the Rogue pub in Newport. Not many Roggenbiers here in the states! Nice earthy flavors marry well w/subtle hopping creating a very quaffable experience. A well brewed beer.
