UPDATED: AUG 3, 2006 Bottle. Hude head on gold murk sledge cider looking stuff. Hoppy funk dirt barn aroma with a little orange spice. foam sud cloud head. A little hop, little bitter, dry, only the faintest sweetness, salty. apple pear, a little cidery. Different from what I usually drink and consequently a bit hard to describe, kinda fun, but not massively appealing.
re-rate on tap at monks - same overall score, didnt know it was same beer (called rogue saison). spicy suacy pepper coriander aroma. usual suspects. orange amber with medium white right head. alcoholic grass-lemon farmy, oranges. OK. alky and watery at same time. gum. So-so.

on tap at the Brickskeller. A very pleasent, easy drinking siason. I was rather pleased. My main opinion was that it was really, really smooth.

A saison looking for a raison? Very zesty - highly carbonated, zesty as in citrusy, and the combination just seems to aggravate the other. I managed to enjoy this while turning my head at awkward angles with an expression befitting a confused dog, because that’s what I wound up feeling like trying to put a finger on what was going on with this beer.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 Ughsmash (5632) - Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA - FEB 17, 2006
Bomber. Gusher, man... oozed out of the bottle and took forever to get a decent amount into the glass. Aroma of banana, coriander, orange peel, wheat, and a whole lotta raw yeast... Flavors of banana, clove, orange, coriander, must, and over-ripe light fruit... a little more pleasant than the aroma, but not so hot for the style. Carbonation was over the top. Yeast and alcohol astringency at the finish, but a nice peppery spice presence came through, too. Not very good overall.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2006 Rogue’s attempt at a saison. Stylistically this beer fails. The flavors are muddled, and unlike the spice character of a beer like Saison Du Paipax, the spice character of this beer seem disjointed, and do not work as well as it should. Pours to a hazy, burt orange color, with a thick, creamy white head, and a vibrant carbonation. The nose on this beer has a melange of spice, but it is muddle, and confusing. Some spicy aromas, marry with some peppery aroma, and some citrus aroma, but they seem to be fighting each other. The palate is soft and full, with some pale and sweet malty flavor, with a back drop of muddled spice flavor. This beer finishes with more sweet malt and spicy flavor up front, then ends with more muddled spice that lingers. Too much going on this beer. Aromas and flavor are raw and unpolished. This beer has lots of aroma and flavor, but is all over the place. Its tasty, but not a good example of saison. A funky beer worth trying, but not Rogue’s best effort.
