Nose is a little like a scotch ale in that it has a certain ’dog foody’ aroma. Very malty sweet nutty flavor. I think this is a great brown ale for when you want something nice and malty. Just wish these rogues weren’t so damn expensive! EHopper (274), Minnesota, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jul 3, 2009 If the gods gave a rich, enticing, liquid brown color a flavor, this would be it. Dark caramel, small amount of sour, easy malt throughout, and perhaps a bit of hazelnut, smooth and bitter at the end. milljam (569), Norman, Oklahoma, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 2, 2009 Faint hints of hazelnuts in the aroma, although mainly a malty presence. Flavor is dry with some toffee sweetness and not much in the way of hazelnut. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side.I continue to be unimpressed by Rogue beers jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 1, 2009 A bit thin and dry on first imipression. Bitterness dominates. However after a while you get a caramel sweetnees, don’t detect a lot of hazelnut, but not terribly iumpressive but not too bad. JoeTheYounger (243), California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Jul 1, 2009 Had on cask at Rogue in Portland. Nutty malty aroma. Hazlenut dark color with barely any head present. Good flavor but kind of flat. I was not impressed with the cask version. I liked the bottled regular version much better. hike20 (33), Iowa, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 26, 2009 Strong nutty aroma, not as strong nut flavor. Taste did not jump out at me, and didn’t linger either. A little higher carbonation than I prefer. Overall pretty decent though, and I would drink it again if offered. Probably won’t be on my shopping list though. greig (171), Hamilton, New Zealand
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 2/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jun 22, 2009 Nutella. More nutella. That’s about it really. Maybe I’m missing the point, as people seem to rate this really well. The head is thin and fades to nothing really quickly. The body is also thin and a little prickly.
I think I’d like to try this almost flat and on handpump. It might be a much better beer. It also possibly just doesn’t travel to NZ well. Never mind. I’ll just have another Dead Guy Ale, that is an awesome beer! unclemike (834), Ft. Riley, Kansas, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 17, 2009 pours a dark mahogany with a slightly beige head. Aroma of nutella, some toasted malt, chocolate. Beautiful, not cloying. Flavour full and silky smooth - wonderful malts, milk chocolate with some dry nuttiness. A slight oiliness as well. Slightly bitter finish. A beautiful, beautiful beer
