(04.30.06) One pint, 6 oz brown bottle from DiCarlo’s, Mundelein, IL. 14P. 33 IBU. Clear dark amber with small off-white head. Soft carbonation. Caramel aroma. Medium bodied brown ale that starts with light malt sweetness. Burnt caramel and biscuit flavors from toasted malt. Finished with light malt fade and light bitterness. Smooth. Though no hazelnut aroma or flavor was detected, this is an excellent brown ale.

22oz bottle: Pours a black/dark brown. Nearly no head, tan. Chocolate, nutty aroma, slight coffee. Taste of chocolate, nuts, coffee. Coffee afertaste. Kind of watery. Reminds me of a porter.

From bomber. Poured a murky brown with dissipating tan head. Nose is sweet nuts. Flavor is more sweet, roasted nuttiness. Palate is a little thin. One of the better browns I’ve had, but still not that exciting.

Rogue is an interesting brewery, one that from my standpoint has always lurked in the shadow of brewers like Stone. For the first time, myself and my drinking partner GarrettB decided to tackle this uncharted territory, starting with the Brown Ale. The pour produced a dusty cola brown body that foams up and quickly reduces to a simple beige cap. Wonderful scents of my childhood are subtly laced together, sweet aromas of Nutella and nougat de Montélimar meld into a caramel cappuccino explosion. The combination is truly enticing and nostalgic to my nose. The flavor, however, is a bit disappointing: the caustic sensation of burnt toast dominates initially and merges with thin notes of caramel, honey, coffee and implied chocolate. The rich fragrances resign to a lucid, two-dimensional palate that lacks the depth it requires to support such substantial flavors. With an unimpressive watery and slightly bitter aftertaste, this brew seems to progresses to an increasingly unfinished state. Not far from a winner, but this Brown Ale requires just a bit more work for my taste.

Bottle shared with Mette, Henniing ad Karen in the garden, as a before-dimmer-beer. A big tastel of Hazenut. Lovely malty smell. Almost no hop smell and taste. Very nice pleasant beer.

Tasty treat with a nice pour and a quality aftertaste on the palate. I’d offer it to a friend.

A very nice pour rich brown in colour, with a pleasant hazelnut aroma. Has a nice creamy tan head that dissipates rather quickly.

UPDATED: JUN 17, 2006 A darned nice nut ale. The hazlenut approach was unique and pleasant, just phenomenal. Appearance was crystal clear ruby brown with a small head and minimal lacing. The aroma was strong hazelnuts with some chocolate behind it. Flavor was dry hazelnuts, with a sweet dark malt base (chocolate?). Mouthfeel light to moderate for the style. After two tastings of this, man, I’m impressed. One of the best nut browns around.

Can’t figure out why, having had this so many times, that I neglected to rate it. Deep garnet body with a small brown head. Nice roasted nut aroma, vanilla notes, malted Whoppers. Full bodied and creamy in the mouth. Same notes in the flavor as in the aroma. Had this once with a shot of Frangelica in it. Awesome.
