otakuden (518), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Aug 6, 2008 For the Rogue in all of us.
Sounds like the story of my life, past, present, and future. Rogue always delivers an excellent brew, and the Hazelnut Brown Nectar is no exception. Available in a 22oz bomber, she quickly fills my glass to her very tip-top, but without overflowing.
Rich, dark brown with hints of amber showing through along the sides of the glass. A thick soft creamy head at least 2 fingers thick quickly forms, and then fades into a lush layer of creamy foam resting on top of the beer. Rich hazelnuts practically overflow from the glass and throughout the nose. Sweet malty caramel notes act as an accent to the intensely sweet roasted hazelnut aroma and palate. For such a succulently aromatic brew, the body and mouthfeel are very balanced. Neither too heavy nor too cloying. An excellent brown ale. The hazelnuts practically dance across my taste buds, sweet and nutty on the first number, then settling into a more mellow malty profile with a hint of hop bitterness in the finish. As she warms, along with the sweet roasted hazelnuts I detect a hint of oats/grain in the nose and the palate, mingling with the hazelnuts to bring an almost "breakfast" taste and aroma to the brew. I would attribute this to the oats aroma I detect. Even so, Hazelnut still goes down smooth and easy, leaving even less of a hop nip at the finish the further along in my glass I go. Fabulous.
Probably one of my favorite American brown ales, Rogue pulls off a stellar traditional and yet revolutionary interpretation of the English Brown Ale style. Easy to quaff, I’ve had Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar both on draft and in the bottle and I can say that both stand proud. yalnikim (776), Wellington, New Zealand Jul 31, 2008 Tasted 26/07/2008. 750ml bottle, in Invercargill, with Sam and Steve. Bloody nutty. Almost over-the-top, like the Chocolate stout, but it is so nicely drinkable behind that nut character that it gets away with it. Again, a perfectly conditioned Rogue ale with a kinky twist. Sweet, a nice desert beer - hold the ice cream. TheGrandMaster (1848), Auckland, New Zealand Jul 30, 2008 Bottle with yalnikim (in NZ), pours brown with a yellowish head. A very nutty aroma, but slightly cardboard. Man this is nutty! Drinks like liquid nutella - nutty and chocolately. Difficult to know how much I actually like this beer - but much respect to the brewer for putting this much nut flavour into a beer. stchloe (477), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 29, 2008 Sooooo nutty. How could not love this beer? Uses the best part of a brown with a true hazelnutness to good effect. jkwalking05 (1483), Arlington, Texas, USA Jul 26, 2008 Thick and creamy head sits on a red/brown colored beer. Malty sweetness with a little nuttiness. Nutty sweetness also in the aroma. msante79 (785), Orland Hills, Illinois, USA Jul 26, 2008 Bomber. Aroma is hazelnuts brown sugger. Flavor was on sweet side with hazelnuts, brown sugger with malt and a touch of hops. Found it to be weak and watery. Was expecting much better. chadje (129), Pasadena, California, USA Jul 21, 2008 Had this on tap. Not my type of beer. Pours a dark brown color with a nice tan head. A nutty and malty scent. A decent tasting beer, but pretty good for a brown ale. Collint (452), Sylva, North Carolina, USA Jul 18, 2008 Bottle, Pours a dark brown. Aroma is sweet of hazelnut and nuts. Flavor is sweet hazelnut and creamy. Full body beer, this is a great beer.
