3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUL 16, 2005 Orange body with a moderate off white head that lasts a long time. Bottle "cellared" for almost a year since I forgot about it! Big hoppy aroma - pine and resin. Flavour is also resin dominant. Malt is present but it is relegated to the supporting cast. Dry alcoholic resin finish washes away glimpses of sweet orange citrus in the middle. Alcohol is pleasant at first but becomes less so as the glass goes on. Medium palate. A bit more time in the bottle might smooth it out. 8/4/7/4/15
<P>Original Rating Bottled. Orangey with no head to speak of. Aroma is a malty alchol "barleywine" like aroma. Very hoppy, but relatively well balanced - not as bitter as I expected. The malt is not very noticable but is enough to keep the bitter from being too over the top. Body is thick but not creamy. A sipper, it leaves the mouth a tad dry. 6/3/7/4/16

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle (nice) - dark gold with slim white head. Aroma of citrus hops, pine, honey maybe. Excellent taste - citrus hops mainly, with touch of floral, nicely dry, good malt backbone. Medium to full bodied, softly carbonated. Nice long bitter finish, touch of late warming alcohol. An excellent DIPA.

Bottle shared @ home from Saveur-Biere.com - Color: hazy dark blond beer with no carbonation and small white foam. Smell: resin and hoppy domination with grassy finish. Taste: hoppy taste and resin notes. Woody taste and alcohol finish. Aftertaste: resin and caramel with alcohol notes. Maybe it was to late to drink this beer....

On tap at Dexters, pours a hazy dark amber orange with a thin white head and some lacing in the glass, the aroma is of heavy citrus and hop resin with a pine touch as well, the flavor has a nice citrus front end with a pine and hop like finish, smooth mouthfeel, not bad.

Clear golden amber with moderate off white spotting and edgework.
Nose is caramel malt forward, candied orange peel, bitter hops, light booze tunes.
Taste comprises orange pith, bitter hoppy wash, grapefruit, mandarina, pine, caramel malt - less so than the aroma dictated.
Medium + bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Keg at the drygate. Pours clear golden amber, merest white head that appears to be forming into a map of Scotland. I know where I am now at least. Aromas are lemon verbena, floral, light syrup. Taste is light bitter, floral notes, almost perfumed and quite intense. Sweet, syrupy finish. Ok.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
This beer is not in front of me right now but I have had this several times, the first being back in 1999 long before I would ever see another imperial IPA. A very unique hop profile with the refreshing quench of the saaz and the cascade pine and earthy EKG, well balanced malt backbone. The recipe may have changed since the commercial listing but I remember that formula well as it was the first beer I tried to copy in a homebrew recipe to achieve those hop flavors. Very unique from what west coast IPA hop profiles are like.
