Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

On tap at the Oldsmar Tap House. Pours deep dark with impressive firm mocha head. The foam head looks like the surface of the moon with various sized craters. The glass clings a consistent cobweb lacing. The aroma is mild with roastiness and a hint of dark fruity esters and faint chocolate. The taste starts mildly roasty with some chocolate. A burnt maltiness then grows and takes over the flavor by the finish with light notes of coffee, toffee and a hint of caramel. I think I was expecting it to be a bit bolder and richer.

On tap at Oldsmar Tap House. Pours a reddish brown, with a frothy head, clean white lacing. Roasted notes in the nose, chocolate, distant coffee, and some very slight orange/citrus. Roasted toffee notes in the flavor, malty goodness, caramel, smoke, and a nice hoppy finish. Smooth, drinkable. Not exactly sure what the ABV is, but it’s fairly drinkable either way.

Draft at the brewery bar in Newport. A pitch black beer with an orange-brown head. The aroma is sweet malty and roasted as well as with hints of acidity from the roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with powerful notes of roasted malt and medium notes of chocolate, leading to a dry bitter finish.

Gravity Keg at Blind Tiger. So I am just not really down with warm beer, every time I get one, I tell my tasting buddy to never let me do it again. Well luckily he wasn’t there yesterday to tell me no. This porter is awesome. It poured a dark chocolate unfiltered brown. You could see that a whole lot was going on in the glass. The nose was so obviously hoppy, I was surprised by it. Chocolate was pretty evident too.The flavor was sweet and bitter, with the hops standing out, and being complemented by the malt backbone, and chocolate and other notes. I am glad I broke my own rule, Definitely try this beer.

Draft in the San Francisco brewpub. A really nice beer, thick with layers of malt, coffee, chocolate and a smooth, slightly hoppy finish. Smooth with many layers of flavor. I had to have another!

Draft @ redlight. Nearly opaque but otherwise dark brown with a thick creamy brown head. Full ashy roast aroma with a background of caramel and even a hint of licorice and/or vanilla. There seems to be alot going on but its pretty dense at the same time. Also, there’s a clear hint of rancid milk that I haven’t sensed since Heavyweight Perkuno’s Hammer. Also somewhat sweaty. Almost weird on the whole! Dry finish. Medium-full mouthfeel.

On tap at Redlight. Poured a pitch black color with a medium sized tan head that leaves lacing all around the glass. The aroma is of chocolate, caramel, coffee, and a hiunt of vanilla along with a good amount of roast. The flavor is much the same with the chocolate and roasty flavors dominating throughout with some earthy hops on the backend. It is medium-full bodied with a creamy mouthfeel that goes down smooth with a roasty finish. This one is solid all around.
