Bobsy (194), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 2, 2008 Sampler at San Francisco Rogue Public House. Jet black with a bubbly coffee coloured head. Suprising amount of hops and alcohol in the nose. Roasted malt and chocolate dominate the flavour, with a dry hoppy finish. Not as heavy bodied as I was expecting, and I fell that a slightly thicker mouthfeel would have complimented the heavy flavours well. drseamus (103), Troy, New York, USA Dec 24, 2007 On tap at Rogue brewpub in San Francisco.
A: Served in a Rogue goblet that weighed about a ton. It was filled to the brim with jet black beer topped with a thick mocha colored head.
S: The first smell that met my nose was fairly surprising; hop aromas. Not what I would have expected in an Imperial Porter, but it is Rogue after all. There is also a bit of roasted malt in the background, but the beer was served too cold to expect a lot of aroma.
T: The flavor is good and thick like it should be. It is very roasty with a good amount of chocolate. When those initial flavors fade away it leaves a bitter hop aftertaste. It is a bit hoppy for my taste, but again, it is a Rogue.
M: Nice and heavy just like it should be.
D: A bit hoppy, but not bad at all. My only complaint is the bitter aftertaste. omhper (12155), Stockholm, Sweden Dec 16, 2007 Draught at Rogue, San Francisco. Near black, firm head. Fruity licorice nose. Dryish, ashy and metallic. Very salty butsurprisingly light bodied. Tarry salty finish with long bitterness. Flavourful, but not a favourite. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 16, 2007 thanks nhorween. not sure if this is the correct beer, but since nick rated it i’ll assume it’s the right one. so much better than the sixpoint porter i had earlier. looks the same, but way more body, way more vanilla, less bitter burnt shit, more sweetness, whatever michael-pollack (2603), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA Dec 11, 2007 Draught: Aroma of fruit, berries, chocolate, and coffee. Poured black in color with a small tan head that lasted throughout. Good lacing. Opaque. Flavor was medium sweet and medium bitter. Tasted fruity and of chocolate and berries. Medium body. Thin texture. Soft carbonation. Fruity finish. A porter? Imperial? Alcohol is well hidden. nhorween (639), Chicago, Illinois, USA Dec 2, 2007 Swing top bottle from NBD. Impenetrable black pour with a thick tan head. Fairly muted aroma - coffee, smoke, nuts, light hops... smells like a pile of leaves, that quintessential fall smell. Really good flavor. Super chocolate-ey and the finish is amazing. This is probably the best Rogue beer I’ve had. Tremendous complex bitter finish. Very well done. dmac (1420), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Nov 28, 2007 On tap at Firewaters. Poured a deep dark brown but it’s so dark in this bar even a Coors LIght would look like a deep dark gold. Roasty aroma of mocha, tobacco and a slight touch of pine. Full bodied with nice carbonation and a slightly dry aftertaste. Flavor of burnt espresso beans, mocha and touch of tar. This is a very dark beer with a very dark taste, quite nice if that’s your thing. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Nov 25, 2007 On draught at the Happy Gnome in St Paul, Minnesota. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thick tan head that has good retention and lacing. Aroma of dark toasted black malt, dark chocolate, a touch of mocha, and some piney/medicinal hops. Taste is medium to full bodied, low carbonation with flavors of dark toasted malt, some bakers chocolate and a sour piney hop taste. Finish is slightly dry, a toasted malt aftertaste, and an above average bitterness that does linger around
