IslandHaole (1035), Onna-Son, Okinawa-Ken, Japan Nov 12, 2007 On Tap @ Popeye’s with TimeE: A thick black beer with a light brown head. A rich roasty aroma. Slightly tart, minerally, roasty, unsweetened cocoa. Nice feel, bittersweet aftertaste. Very good. bhensonb (4182), Woodland, California, USA Nov 11, 2007 Draft at the SF alehouse. Very llight aroma of toasted malt. Very light. Opaque black color with a decent tan head. The flavor is coffee with underlying toasted malt. A slight hint of medicinal sour. The finish is dry, toasted malt (but mild, not harsh) and a deal of coffee. Just great. hellbilly (1492), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Nov 10, 2007 tap @ papago. pours a woody black with a fluffy tan head. aroma of cocoa powder, super roasted malts, (baltic like) ripe fruits and some ashiness. robust malt flavor with sweet fruits ( maybe prunes), wood and dark chocolate. nice acidity, bitterness and dry hoppy kick at the finish. coffee lingers in the aftertaste. rich mouth feel is nicely acidic and not sticky. TimE (1300), Tokyo, Japan Nov 10, 2007 Hoppy for the style, but nose is lacking definition. Mouth shows good roasted character and prunes and caramel. Not bad, but a bit one dimensional. eaglefan538 (2355), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Nov 9, 2007 Draft at SL, courtesy Robert. The appearance was dark brown-black, resinous bitter dry chocolate/cocoa. The flavor was bitter chocolate, full pine-hop presence, bitter chocolate, somewhat acidic even, lingering roasty aspects, licorice, light coffee elements also in the aftertaste. Body was only moderate relative to its Impy Porter peers, somewhat astringently acidic mouthfeel in the finish, nothing at all syrupey or sticky or sweet! A decent brew, thanks Robert! Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Nov 9, 2007 THOUGHTS: Nice beer. Pretty good prter. A little more like a stout to me.
TECHNICAL: On tap at the Grey Lodge. Poured a dark brown with a small tan head that mostly diminished and left no lacing. The aroma was heavy to harsh coffee and dark fruit with some hops too. The initial flavor was moderately bitter and sweet, while the finish was heavily sweet. The flavor was mostly coffee, but there was also hop bitterness that blended with the coffee bitterness. The medium to full body was oily with lightly tingly carbonation and a lightly astringent and lighlty alcoholic finish. sloth (1657), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Nov 3, 2007 Draft @statelineliquors, thanks Robert!! Medium sized tan head with good retention and a fair amount of sticky lace hanging around. Nose is lightly roasty, chocolatey and a little dusty. Medium almost full bodied brew, lightly oily on the palate, sorta chewy. Roast and chocolate up front, grainy notes, light pineyness, berrys, bittersweet, licoricey with a hint of smoke. Dry, roasty finish. A tastey little brew indeed. Drinks easy. Thanks again Robert! incutrav (576), Woodbury, Minnesota, USA Nov 2, 2007 Im not sure about this one. Very thin mouthfeel. I didnt detect much in the way of malt or hops, or richness that usually goes with a baltic. I didnt get any bitterness that others have mentioned. I had this after two Darkness’s, so my pallate probably wasnt at its best. Might have to sample again.
