Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

On tap at Barley’s Taproom: Pours a deep black color with a thick, creamy tan colored head. Decent aroma of chocolate. Thick, creamy mouthfeel with a big chocolate flavor. Finishes with slight hop bitterness. No alcohol in the taste.

Draft at the Issaquah brewhouse. Very black, almost opaque, with thin orange highlights. Head was khaki and thick with good retention and lacing. Smelled of molasses and chocolate. Very roasty and dry on the tongue. Tasted of coffee and bitter chocolate. There was also a hint of toffee at the end which emerged as the beer warmed. I didn’t detect 7.8% alcohol. Assertive bitterness was present throughout, I assume due to a combination of the hops and heavily roasted malt. Pretty good stuff.

Words: Barley’s Greenville

Appearance: solid dark brown, lots of lace,
Aroma: still the same dry dark chocolate aroma this year,
Flavor: rich dark chocolate flavor, the bitterness melds really well with the dark chocolate, long bitter finish with only a hint of the malt bitterness from last year,

touch of malty sweetness in the flavor brings out even more of the rich chocolate, still a long bitter finish with more of the roasted malts showing up with a touch of astrengency

Aroma: dry dark chocolate and roasted aroma, kept dry by earthyness,
Flavor: flavor starts off very dry with a lot of roasted malt, warming brings just a touch of dark caramel sweetness but it is chased away by lots of earthy hops,

Pours opaque black with a thick tan head. The aroma has lots of chocolate and roasted grain with a touch of spicy hops. The flavor starts off with lots of bitter chocolate, some hops, and a touch of sweet malts to counter the bitterness. The middle of the tongue finds more bitter chocolate - almost like unsweetened cocoa powder. The finish is unexpectedly dry and bitter with a touch of hops and lots of bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel is quite velvety and creamy with just the right level of body and the right level of carbonation. Overall, a very nice brew.

Deep dark, rich brew with a minuscule greyish head. Looked flat, but was nicely carbonated. Slight nose of alcohol with notes of chocolate and vanilla, much like Rogue’s imperial stout. Nice touch of floral, spicy, oniony Summit hops. Creamy and mega-quaffable. Niiiice!

This draft brew from the Oregon Brewers festival poured a head of foamy fine to medium sized bubbles that were mostly diminishing and left behind a opaque no visible carbonation black colored body and a fair lacing. The mild aroma was dark malt and burnt malt. . The flavor contained notes of hops roasted malt and dark malt. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.

Brown in color with little head. Deep chocolate and coffee aroma and flavors. The beer was a pleasure to drink. Though a cold weather brew this was easy to drink finished nice and was not too over the top as an imperial porter. Liked the hops and the bitterness was quite nice one of the best Impy Porters I have ever had.

Draft at 07 OBF: Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee, sweet smelling. Flavor is very nicely chocolate and semi sweet, lots of coffee and burnt wood flavors, definitely some hop bitterness but it blends perfectly with the roasted bitterness so that you cannot pick out any specific hop flavor. Medium slightly syrupy body, extremely balanced. Extremely drinkable.
