Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

On tap at RichO’s. Opaque black with a tan leather medium head. Aroma of chocolates and malt. Syrupy thick mouthfeel at first with maple, nuts, chocolate and malt. Nice sipping brew.

Sampled on tap on 8/15/06: Pours a nearly opaque black with dark brown edges and a big, frothy, well-lacing tan head. Aroma has a pleasant roastiness and dark chocolate with a good piny hop balance. Body starts with a good sweet caramel and chocolate maltiness with a big hoppy bitterness and a smooth bittersweet dark chocolate finish. A nice imperial porter.

Growler and dry hopped. Almost black with a tan head. Malty and feels very smooth. Notes of syrup, chocolate and dark fruits. Has a strong herbal feel as well as tea - maybe from the dryhopping. Very interesting.

Faux hand pull at Roman’s. Dark brown/black, thick tan head. Very smooth palate, sweet with maple syrup, chocolate, sugary rum raisins. Light hop touch, barely noticable amongst the seemingly sweetened roasted malts. Pretty good.

On tap at the Astoria Rogue house. Pours dark brown with a brown head. Very roasty burnt chocolate flavor with a medium bitter finish. Lots of black licorice flavor shows as it warms. Nice and smooth on the palate, good brew.

John’s Locker Imperial Porter, on tap at Crunchy’s in East Lansing...black body with small beige head..aroma is typical of a roasted porter...nice toasted malts, with a bit of sugar and toffee...flavor brings out some uncharacteristic hops to the roasted, sugary malts...some vanilla/cream present as well...the palate was a tad thin for a porter

pours a deep brown with a considerable tan head that laces. smells of roasted coffee and cocoa. tastes sweet and malty with some sprinkled nuttiness. finishes dry and slightly bitter. less rich than most porters I’ve tried which is maybe why i like it so much. its more subtle -"clean". very very good.

on tap at richo’s. black with brown edges and a tan head that lasts forever. roasted coffee aroma. bittersweet mocha flavor. nutty coffee finish with a hint of hops and a strange somewhat unpleasant vegetable flavor. medium to full bodied. moderate carbonation. decent but i was expecting more.
