Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

Draught pint at the Happy Gnome in St. Paul, Minnesota, October 2006. Smallish tan head with thick opaque lacing resting smoothly atop the impenetrable jet body....figgy, medium chocolaty aroma, black malts and surprisingly little in the way of detectable hops from this hophead brewer....body is bitter and tarry, lots of baker’s chocolate, somewhat burnt and leathery, subdued grapiness at midpalate....a bit too loose and unfocused at the finish, carbonation on the low side even it seems to me for this style....still a solid entry and surprisingly never feels overhopped to me.

On tap at Rogue, Portland. Black, lasting tan head. Bit like the Impy Stout, but with a bit more choc and less sour. Quite smooth actually. I rather like this for its intensity and the alcohol. Could have this on a cold winter night and enjoy it immensely

On tap at Blue Dog Tavern. Dark brown/black with a nice tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, brown sugar. Rich flavor of malts, chocolate, dried fruits, hops and finished with a vanilla/bourbon as it warmed a bit. Well balance beer with a nice chewy texture. Very enjoyable and did seem to have more of a kick than the 7.7% listed above.

John’s Locker Imperial Porter, on tap at Crunchy’s in East Lansing, but mislabeled as Imperial Stout. Deep brown-black body, thin tan head. Aroma of sweet underfermented malts, soy, brown sugar, and charred malts. Sweet body with dark fruits (berries), soy, and roasted malts, unbalanced, potent, and inky, with abundant bitter piney hops notes. Hints of marshmallow. Alcohol notable but not overpowering. Interesting, but rough around the edges.

(draft) Black body with pillowy tan head, nice lacing. Moderately sweet, roast, cherry, vanilla, chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, roast, cherry, chocolate, some vanilla, alcohol. Light alcohol burn in finish. Medium-full body.

draft. Decent aroma but not as aromatic as I was expecting. Very dark with a burnt head that stays. Flavor is disappointing. Not as well balanced as it should be and a very odd aftertaste.

probably the heaviest beer i have ever had. poured a black oily color with a brown head which had good retenton. Aroma was sweet with cocca and toffee notes, a coffee aroma kind of balanced it out. Taste was sweet with chocolate notes; bitter dense chocolate notes. It seemed to be higher in alcohol then 7.7%.
