Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

From groovy black bottle purchased at someplace quite a while ago. 2008 vintage I believe. The aroma has a little bit of age to it already, almost like good quality soy sauce, but mostly it is roasted coffee notes and burnt oat. The flavor has a nice smooth roasted almond flavor, smooth chocolate coffee and and some light vanilla notes. I think this is the kind of thing Rogue needs to push into full force, let the flavor loose and start sending palates and palates of it to Ohio.

Had on tap in a pint glass. The flavor was mainly big roast with a dash of salty soy sauce.

On tap at the brewery on 6/28/09. Pours black with nice tan head and great lacing. Incredibly smokey aroma with coffee and chocolate. Well balanced with a nice bitter coffee finish.

Draught at Rogue in SF during RBSG09. Black with a light tan head. The aroma was kinda nice with chocolate and plum, but also had an odd pencil lead component to it. the flavor was darkly roasted, dry, and lightly sour with a medium bitterness. Medium-full body with a chalky feel. Not really good, but oddly drinkable after a couple more astringent beers.

RBSG09 on tap at the Rogue Publick House in SF. Pours deep clear red-brown with some dark tan foam. Aroma is chocolate with caramel and roastiness. Light boring porter flavor, doesn’t taste imperial at all. Cocoa powder, milk chocolate, light acidic roasted character. Chalky astringent mouthfeel.

Poured out a very large medium tan head that neared an inch and that was from the last half of a bottle. Retention goes quickly to a skim with decent messy lacing. Super dark brown (which does lighten as the glass thins) in colour. Aroma: milk chocolate and dry cocoa, vanilla, oak, fake cherry that is weak on the ’fake’ side, so complex! The flavour is excellent - how, after numerous Rogue XS overpriced beers have they finally came up with a superior beer; creamy chocolate, vanilla, unknown fruit, coffee (very faint, thank god), a bit of herbal hops. The mouth feel is amazingly smooth and soft, full bodied, sometimes there is notable strong bitterness on the finish. Wow! Finally, an excellent above expectation XS beer from Rogue -easily the best of the entire series up to this point. Even at a retarded 23$ a bottle, I may get more. Best just before warm.***I have to say, at a very room temperature, the bitterness and hops come out.... so, don’t wait that long!***
