lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Feb 24, 2009 2008 XS bottle. Poursa dark brown with some red hints and a lasting dark tan cover. Some licorice, a bit of a foreign stout sourness, coffee and bitterness in the aroma. Taste is lots of sweet chocolate and bitter coffee beans, some anise, fairly light and fruity for a big dark beer. Miksu (2194), Jyväskylä, Finland Feb 21, 2009 Ceramic swing top bottle at Stockholm Beer Festival 2008. Hazy brown color. Sweet vinous aroma with salty licorice, leather and grass. Dryer flavor with salty licorice, coffee, rogue yeast fruitiness and some grassiness. Sweetish finish. I got the end of bottle and this sample was a bit yeasty. larsniclas (3383), Gothenburg, Sweden Feb 20, 2009 Draught at Rogue Ales Public House, SF
Dark brown with a beige head.
Burnt and salty; tar and peat.
Warming alcohol.
High bitterness dagimp (108), Philly, Pennsylvania, USA Feb 17, 2009 On at at McMenamin’s in Mt. Airy, PA. Little to no head. Good chocolaty and coffee smell; mainly coffee. Taste was exactly the same as the smell. Not quite as powerful as would have thought though. Flavor was a little bit lacking, as well as the mouth feel. All in all a good beer, but nothing that really set it apart from other good porters. I would drink again but wouldn’t go looking for it. DrDavid (957), Johnson, Vermont, USA Feb 14, 2009 Bottle. Very roasty, chocolatety aroma. Black body, creamy light brown head. Flavor is much like aroma, roasty and chocolatety. Fairly nice, but at the usual criminally overpriced Rogue rates. Pawola22 (676), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Feb 7, 2009 On tap at the flying saucer in KC. Pours a black body with a rich, thick and creamy, beige head that remains beautifully laced. Damn the flying saucer makes a beer look good. Relatively faint aroma is an upfront hop bitterness and roasted malts. Some sweet acidic cherries and a good amount of rich dark chocolate and medium burnt coffee. Flavor is much nicer than the aroma. Abundance of earthy hops with a nice balance of semi sweet malts. More and more rich dark chocolate and slightly burnt coffee flavors come out as this warmed up. More of the slightly acidic cherry flavor in the finish along with a bit of salt. Ends with a good amount of earthy hops and lingering coffee. Moderately dry and medium bodied. Overall, the aroma was nothing to write home about, but the flavor was pretty damn good. I liked this hoppy porter compared to others because it still had the rich chocolate and roastiness that I look for. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Feb 1, 2009 Noticeable hops in this porter but it is still a porter and still drinks bloody well. Black in body with a good size light tan head. Rich dark chocolate on the nose that comes through in the taste but aided with some coffee, hints of liquorice and tar. CanIHave4Beers (838), Des Moines, Iowa, USA Jan 29, 2009 Possibly one of the best in the whole Rouge XS, strong beer, locker stock (WHATEVER THEY CALL IT THIS WEEK) lot. This has a very earthy aroma, and I can smell the coffee aromas from three feet away, pretty awesome. The colour is very dark and there is a ruby red tint when held up to the light. There is also a small head with good lace. The flavor is very earthy, my wife says it tastes like dirt! I think it tastes much better than that, I like the coffee notes in the flavor. This is largley dry and has a good bitterness, and there is some good fruity notes in the background. The mouthfeel is very nice!
