Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

Tap at Strong Ale 2008. Pours black with a tan ring. Nose is sweet and off. Taste is sweet and off, overall a big old eh.

Pours a rich black color with frothy light brown head. Aroma is of anise, dark roasted malt, light chocolate, and some spent coffee grinds. Taste is of light chocolate, roasted malt, mild coffee and some anise/icorice notes. Carbonation is well suited for the brew and alcohol is very tame. Very tasty! I’d pick this up again if I didn’t get stuck paying $5 for a ceramic bottle.

Pours a pitch black with a thin off-white head that leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is rum, raisins, brown sugars, and some rich dark chocolate. Taste is bitter up front, some smoke, and finishes with some semi-sweet chocolate.

Bottle. Pitch black with tan frothy head. Chocolate aroma, smooth and sweet like a rich, rum-drenched chocolate cake. Good body and mouthfeel with quaffability and soft substantial carbonation. Slightly burnt but a nice sweetness throughout . Comes across as being too short. Would like it to linger more. Does not have a lot of depth but still has nice chocolate and coffee robustness. Not a "wow" beer but very nice.

Sample at the Columbus Ratebeer gathering at ogglethorp’s 11/20/08: The beer pours nearly black with a medium light brown head that diminishes steadily. Patchy sheet of lacing. Roasted malt, chocolate and hops aroma. Medium, dry body with a roasty character and flavors of coffee, hops and chocolate. Toasted malt balances the bitterness well. The finish is cocoa and malt, leaving a mild hoppy aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Near black body. Thin, light brown head. Chewy aroma with some dark fruit and light chocolate. Rich dark fruits and a burnt coffee character. Less than what I wanted.

26 oz bottle - Poured dark like night. Scent is hops, chocolate, vanilla and smoke. Tasted hops, chocoate and thats it. A pretty decent porter but not worth the $$$ I paid for the bottle. Should have spent less time on bottle and more time on beer.

Draft at the Portland pub. Deep black with a small tan head. First smell and taste is acrid burnt black malt and astringent smoke. Harsh and unsettling, but the palate succumbs to this harshness - numbed by it, actually - and the rest of the drink is more of a smooth smoked chocolate malt experience. Hop character is minimal or difficult to pick up under the astringent black malt . Finishes with a semi-bitter chocolate syrup note. Overall it’s pretty forgettable.
