Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

Had at the Brewery by the bay location about a month ago (found my notes). On tap. Poured dark color with cocoa-colored head. Smell slightly hoppy, and somewhat chocolately, but really not much aroma at all. Mouthfeel thinner than expected. The taste was pretty muted for a strong Rogue beer. The alcohol wasn’t overpowering with regard to taste. In all, an ok beer but I had much better Imp Porters during my Oregon trip.

Tap at Popeye’s. Black with a touch of lace. Big winey, chocolate aroma with coffee, huge malts, dark fruits, and some wood and smoke. Smoky, burnt flavor; hugely burnt and bitter. Great aroma, flavor interesting bit a bit too burnt and bitter for me.

On tap at Firewaters. Poured a deep dark brown but it’s so dark in this bar even a Coors LIght would look like a deep dark gold. Roasty aroma of mocha, tobacco and a slight touch of pine. Full bodied with nice carbonation and a slightly dry aftertaste. Flavor of burnt espresso beans, mocha and touch of tar. This is a very dark beer with a very dark taste, quite nice if that’s your thing.

Draught at Rogue in SF during RBSG09. Black with a light tan head. The aroma was kinda nice with chocolate and plum, but also had an odd pencil lead component to it. the flavor was darkly roasted, dry, and lightly sour with a medium bitterness. Medium-full body with a chalky feel. Not really good, but oddly drinkable after a couple more astringent beers.

Pours a deep black with a thick off white head. The aroma is hoppy with dry chocolate coffee malt. A hoppy dry chocolate malt taste with a thin porter like body. Finishes dry with a bitter hop finish. Very nice.

Had on tap in a pint glass. The flavor was mainly big roast with a dash of salty soy sauce.

Pint @ Harrisons bar & grille. Ok nose, Like a powdered cocoa mix. Brownish black color, tough it’s not the best lighting to judge color by, Good head & lace. Bittersweet flavor, Bakers chocolate, little carmely, maybe some pine or maybe mint is a better way to put it. Abv is there, but not overwhelming . Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, bitter finish that leaves a powdery coating on the tongue. Tasty enough
