Commercial Description:
JLS Release #16: Imperial Porter ~ for summer you ask? Why the hell not! This is not your average porter, this is not Mocha Porter. This is a huge mouthful of malt and hops. It has notes of bitter rich chocolate and hints of tar. A new hop variety called Summit was used to give it the perfect hop balance. This Porter is the Creme de la Creme! Unfiltered, Unrefined, Uncompromised. Imperial Porter is brewed with two row pale, Munich, dark crystal, chocolate and black malts; and 100% Summit hops. Original Gravity @ 18.7 degrees plato, Finishing Gravity @ 4.75 degrees plato, IBU’s around 60!

On tap at Rogue, Portland. Black, lasting tan head. Bit like the Impy Stout, but with a bit more choc and less sour. Quite smooth actually. I rather like this for its intensity and the alcohol. Could have this on a cold winter night and enjoy it immensely

Draught@Oliver Twist as "XS Imperial Porter"
Pitch black, small brown head. Roasted, a bit licorice and glue in the nose. Sticky licorice, coffee, roasted malty flavor. Slightly glueish notes disturb.

On tap at Capone’s. Poured a deeper brown color with reddish tints and an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of coffee, chocoalte, roast, and caramel. Tastes of coffee, chocoalte, roast, pine, and some citrus. Sweeter tastes.

Draft... Pitch black with a small, creamy, beige head. Great retention. The aroma is of coffee and chocolate with touches of caramel, vanilla and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Burnt and bitter with blackstrap molasses. Finishes a touch thin and crisp. Thanks to juiceisloose for buying the pint!

Sampled on tap on 8/15/06: Pours a nearly opaque black with dark brown edges and a big, frothy, well-lacing tan head. Aroma has a pleasant roastiness and dark chocolate with a good piny hop balance. Body starts with a good sweet caramel and chocolate maltiness with a big hoppy bitterness and a smooth bittersweet dark chocolate finish. A nice imperial porter.

Draft at the Portland pub. Deep black with a small tan head. First smell and taste is acrid burnt black malt and astringent smoke. Harsh and unsettling, but the palate succumbs to this harshness - numbed by it, actually - and the rest of the drink is more of a smooth smoked chocolate malt experience. Hop character is minimal or difficult to pick up under the astringent black malt . Finishes with a semi-bitter chocolate syrup note. Overall it’s pretty forgettable.

Ceramic bottle listed at 8.2%. Brown color with a tallish, somewhat creamy looking, light tan head. After my last porter this one has a ton more hops in the nose. Some grapefruit notes with just a hint of caramel and fruit. Blindfolded, I would have not guessed a porter. From the start this one is fairly dry. Malt and salted grapefruit in the front and middle. Charred wood in the finish and especially in the linger. This one calls for another sip just to wash away the ashes. I do not get much black malt bitterness, more the charred flavors. A pale with scorched coffee seem to comprise this one.
