Aug 12, 2007 Pours opaque black with a thick tan head. The aroma has lots of chocolate and roasted grain with a touch of spicy hops. The flavor starts off with lots of bitter chocolate, some hops, and a touch of sweet malts to counter the bitterness. The middle of the tongue finds more bitter chocolate - almost like unsweetened cocoa powder. The finish is unexpectedly dry and bitter with a touch of hops and lots of bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel is quite velvety and creamy with just the right level of body and the right level of carbonation. Overall, a very nice brew.

Nov 28, 2008 Pours a pitch black with a thin off-white head that leaves some spotty lacing. Aroma is rum, raisins, brown sugars, and some rich dark chocolate. Taste is bitter up front, some smoke, and finishes with some semi-sweet chocolate.

Sep 12, 2008 on tap from the rogue bar in portland. pitch black pour with a thin tan head. light aroma of coffee and mocha. nice full bodied texture. even bitterness throughout with a dry finish. tastes of dark chocolate and pine hops. great stuff. k-8

Jul 27, 2007 Draft at 07 OBF: Pours black with a small brown head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee, sweet smelling. Flavor is very nicely chocolate and semi sweet, lots of coffee and burnt wood flavors, definitely some hop bitterness but it blends perfectly with the roasted bitterness so that you cannot pick out any specific hop flavor. Medium slightly syrupy body, extremely balanced. Extremely drinkable.

Nov 10, 2007 tap @ papago. pours a woody black with a fluffy tan head. aroma of cocoa powder, super roasted malts, (baltic like) ripe fruits and some ashiness. robust malt flavor with sweet fruits ( maybe prunes), wood and dark chocolate. nice acidity, bitterness and dry hoppy kick at the finish. coffee lingers in the aftertaste. rich mouth feel is nicely acidic and not sticky.

Jan 29, 2009 Possibly one of the best in the whole Rouge XS, strong beer, locker stock (WHATEVER THEY CALL IT THIS WEEK) lot. This has a very earthy aroma, and I can smell the coffee aromas from three feet away, pretty awesome. The colour is very dark and there is a ruby red tint when held up to the light. There is also a small head with good lace. The flavor is very earthy, my wife says it tastes like dirt! I think it tastes much better than that, I like the coffee notes in the flavor. This is largley dry and has a good bitterness, and there is some good fruity notes in the background. The mouthfeel is very nice!

Dec 20, 2008 Ceramic bottle typical of Rogue special releases. Pours darkest brown with a medium tan head. Malty aroma with some alcohol and roastiness. Sweet malt up front with a roasty coffee finish. Pretty darn good.

Mar 17, 2007 Sampled on tap on 8/15/06: Pours a nearly opaque black with dark brown edges and a big, frothy, well-lacing tan head. Aroma has a pleasant roastiness and dark chocolate with a good piny hop balance. Body starts with a good sweet caramel and chocolate maltiness with a big hoppy bitterness and a smooth bittersweet dark chocolate finish. A nice imperial porter.
