Commercial Description:
The recipe comes from Rogue’s Eugene City Brewery and is being produced in Newport for distribution initially in kegs only to JLS accounts. A 750-ml ceramic swing-top bottle will be released in 2008, along with draft. Deep copper chestnut color with toffee, brown sugar, nuts, and spice aromas. A rich supple entry leads to an off-dry medium body of tangy raisins and citrus marmalade, bittersweet chocolate, and mild spice flavors. It finishes with a long nutty, fruity fade. Imperial Red is brewed with Crystal, Chocolate, Munich and two-row Pale Malts; Palisade and Aroma Crystal hops, Pacman Yeast, and Free Range Coastal Waters. Measurements: 20 degrees Plato, 75 IBUs, 77 Appaprant Attentuation, 57 degrees Lovibond, 9% ABV.

$20 for a black swingtop ceramic bottle from Sherbrooke Liquors in Edmonchuk. Had this alongside the Lagunitas Imperial Red. THE IMPERIAL RED SHOWDOWN!! This came across as the bigger beer, but less refined. Cloudy red-brown with a dense tan head. Heavy resinous hop aroma dominates. Thick malts bolster the palate, but the hop character is all bitter and resinous, a little harsh even when paired alongside the Lagunitas, which has a better malt-hop balance, and a lot more fruitier aromatics that make it a more enjoyable beer in my opinion.

On tap at Rogue Brewery. Pours a rather still red w/out very much of a head. The nose is lightly sweet w/out a ton of roundness for an ostensible red. Stronger C-word hops. Floral w/ some citrus.Fuller on the palate but not entirely thick. Flavors in line w/ the nose. More sweetness, perhaps somemalt. Enjoyable enough, for shiz, but not going to be worth XSprices.

Poured from the ceramic bottle a deep copper color with foamy tan head. Aroma of bready malts, brown sugar and hops. Flavor was malts, brown sugar, toffee, mild spices and bitter hops at the finish. Sweet and syrupy texture with a long aftertaste enhanced by the hops. Very unique and full flavored. I am surprised at its low ratings so far.

On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown. Clear reddish copper body with a small creamy off-white head. Sweet caramel and nutty aroma, slightly sugary. Very sugary flavor, with light tea-like hints and some fruit and a lot of hops. Medium body with medium carbonation and a syrupy slightly alcoholic finish.

Not very good at all. Red color. Alcohol in the aroma and more hot alcohol and dry malt in the flavor. More of an Irish ale or malt liquor than an American strong. Not very good at all, especially for the price.

Tap at Map Room. Distinct fruity nose with a deep bitterness. Too much focus on the IBUs and not enough on developing a balanced beer. Didn’t have teh support of the malt. Decent, but I wouldn’t go out of my way.
