Commercial Description:
The recipe comes from Rogue’s Eugene City Brewery and is being produced in Newport for distribution initially in kegs only to JLS accounts. A 750-ml ceramic swing-top bottle will be released in 2008, along with draft. Deep copper chestnut color with toffee, brown sugar, nuts, and spice aromas. A rich supple entry leads to an off-dry medium body of tangy raisins and citrus marmalade, bittersweet chocolate, and mild spice flavors. It finishes with a long nutty, fruity fade. Imperial Red is brewed with Crystal, Chocolate, Munich and two-row Pale Malts; Palisade and Aroma Crystal hops, Pacman Yeast, and Free Range Coastal Waters. Measurements: 20 degrees Plato, 75 IBUs, 77 Appaprant Attentuation, 57 degrees Lovibond, 9% ABV.

Source:Ceramic bottle.
Glass:Snifter.
Appearance:Ruddy brown pour with a two finger off white head.
Aroma:Caramel and toffee with a hint of earth.
Flavor:Caramel and toffee malt base, with brown sugar and molasses in the finish along with a mild bitterness.
Palate:Full body with solid carbonation.
Overall:Better than I expected. Probably would have been better fresh, but still excellent.

Bottle from Jungle Jim’s. Poured hazy brown color with an average frothy light brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toffee, nuts, brown sugar aroma. Moderate to heavy smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy biitersweet flavor to medium to heavy bitter and alcohol burn finish of moderate to long duration. My expectations where met with a good complex beer.

Spotted this one at Friendly Mini-Mart so I decided to drink the one I had purchased at Chuck’s in Chagrin Falls earlier this year. 2008 Vintage (I think). The aroma of this one is a pretty nice caramel malt that has been nicely aged. It has the bitterness rubbed off a bit to give it a more gentle flavor, more earthy tones and a little bit of brown sugar sweetness. The age hits it a slight bit negatively, but overall is quite good.

Had on tap in a snifter at J. Clyde in Birmingham, AL. This imperial red almost equals a normal IPA, just with bits of caramel roasted malt thrown in. Suprisingly citrusy for a red.

[2239-20090606] Sample. Sweet caramel toffee aroma has mild grainy toast. Hazy, dark amber brown body with a long-lasting foamy light tan head. Boozy caramelized grain malt flavour also has some sugary malt. Full body. Boozy but not overpowering.

Bottle at ’Mondial de la Biere 2009’, Montréal, QC. Pours a hazy orange-brown with a small tan head. Aroma of caramel and/or toffee, hops and alcohol. Flavour’s overly sweet and boozy, not enjoyable to drink. Average to medium bodied. I didn’t care for this.

On tap at the brewery on 6/28/09. Pours a dark hazy red with good lacing. Interesting balance of caramel, vanilla and pine and citrus aroma. Balanced beer with nice caramel sweetness, but a bit boozy.

Bottle: The aroma consists of toffee, caramel, light fruit, and aged hops. It pours a mostly transparent brownish-red with a small off-white head. The flavor starts with tons of caramel up front. There’s also some toffee and a hint of fruit. The finish has some aged citrus hops. Medium-full bodied with mild carbonation and slightly syrupy mouthfeel.
