buzzoven (333), Japan Apr 24, 2009 Served as a half pint at The Aldgate. Very dark colour (looked like deep barley tea) with a nice off-white head. Very little nose but tasted of whiskey-soaked apples, prunes, tobacco. Kinda liked this. scrizzz (1252), kirkland, Washington, USA Apr 21, 2009 draft at issaquah brewhouse. deep mahogany, sweet caramel aroma. pine and spruce, rich burnt caramel, some campfire smokiness. great beer. angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Apr 16, 2009 Bottle thanks to americanbrew. BMan1113VR (2757), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Apr 12, 2009 Ceramic bottle thanks to AmEricanbrew. Pours with a small white head over a hazy amber body. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, and currants. Taste is currants caramel and hops. Watery to syrupy mouthfeel. Light carbonation. bluevegie (2169), Perth, Australia Mar 24, 2009 Looked quite dark as I was pouring this into my glass but it is a lovely red colour with an off-white head. Big malty aroma which was a little unexpected (for a big american beer) first thought was dark fruits, figs and raisins, then caramel notes and brown sugar. Second pour into the glass left a lot of sediment and made it brown and cloudy. Taste was what the nose promised, along with a touch of liquorice and spice. Medium body with a pleasantly lasting finish. Missus said she couldn’t drink too much of it but it went down with ease for me. drjay44 (758), Salida, Colorado, USA Mar 13, 2009 750 ml. swing top bottle. 8.25% ABV. Pours a thinnish head over a cloudy, with some particles, amber reddish body.....nose redolent of heavy malt with loads of bready aromas....tastes initially of sweet malts rolling into hop balance then molasses, coffee and a final lingering medium hop bitterness....mouthfeel is heavy and quite nice. Muggus69 (500), Sydney, Australia Mar 10, 2009 750ml Growler 9%alc/vol
Red-tinged brown body, quite murky, small tan collar.
BIG malt aroma dominates; mild roastiness, plenty of rich burnt caramel, mollasses, treacle, undertones of marmalady-y and spicey hopiness.
Relatively low carbonation. Palate starts rich, somewhat sweet and malty, balanced with a very big bitterness that lingers for an eternity.
Alot going on, malt seems dominant, plenty of brown sugar, burnt toffee, light smokines/roastiness. Sharp hopiness, lots of citrus; bitter orange and grapefruit rind, earthy spice grittiness, plenty of grassiness linger on the finish. Alcohol barely noticeable, clean yeast profile.
Huge malt character to go alongside a huge bitterness, hard to see past it all to the beer base, but its quite a journey nonetheless.
