Commercial Description:
The recipe comes from Rogue’s Eugene City Brewery and is being produced in Newport for distribution initially in kegs only to JLS accounts. A 750-ml ceramic swing-top bottle will be released in 2008, along with draft. Deep copper chestnut color with toffee, brown sugar, nuts, and spice aromas. A rich supple entry leads to an off-dry medium body of tangy raisins and citrus marmalade, bittersweet chocolate, and mild spice flavors. It finishes with a long nutty, fruity fade. Imperial Red is brewed with Crystal, Chocolate, Munich and two-row Pale Malts; Palisade and Aroma Crystal hops, Pacman Yeast, and Free Range Coastal Waters. Measurements: 20 degrees Plato, 75 IBUs, 77 Appaprant Attentuation, 57 degrees Lovibond, 9% ABV.

Draught @ STBOWF. Stockholm Beer Festival 2008, Sweden.
Clear medium amber red brown color with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is caramel, spice, fruity, light alcohol. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft, finish feel is light alcoholic. [260908]

Bottle. Lightly hazed and muddy rust/blood colored body. Nose of sweet cherries, oranges and toasted/crust, some very evident crystal and munich malts give it a distinct caramel and apple sweetness, but there is also a noticeable acidic/muddy yeast presence in the nose. Harsh and bitter caramel apple malt throughout, astringent and rough, with the moderately acidic yeast unnecessarily clouding what would otherwise be a decent flavor. Hop bitterness is high, roughness is pronounced. Pretty much the definition of big, astringent, sweet and sticky American strong ale.

On draught at Breakwater Brewing in Oceanside. This beer pours a deep red color with a medium beige head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing. Floral hops and malt in the nose, along with some spiced undertones. Medium body with flavors of sweet malt and caramel, dark fruit and hops. The finish is malty and fruity, with a somewhat hoppy aftertaste that lingers a bit. Pretty good overall.

Pretty dark reddish brown color. Thick tan head. Lots of lacing. Some fruitiness, brown sugar, and caramel in the aroma. Not as hoppy as I thought it might be. Sweet caramel taste. A bit of orange peel. Some molasses. Apple juice. Clove. It’s complex but maybe there’s too much going on. I wouldn’t turn it down but I’m not buying again.

On tap at hamiltons. Pours with a deep brown-red body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a floral hop note and a note of dark fruit. Full bodied, chewy and warming.

On tap at Lunar Brewing. Poured a deep red color with an off white head. Aroma is of spice and malts. Taste is of malts, spices, and some raisins. Moderate lingering caramel taste. No presence of the alcohol. I was not impressed. The body was very watery, and there was not much to the flavor.

Big lift on the nose of sweet cooked fruit. Good balance throughout. Spices pop up mid-palate before burnt fruits drive an ok finish.
