Commercial Description:
The recipe comes from Rogue’s Eugene City Brewery and is being produced in Newport for distribution initially in kegs only to JLS accounts. A 750-ml ceramic swing-top bottle will be released in 2008, along with draft. Deep copper chestnut color with toffee, brown sugar, nuts, and spice aromas. A rich supple entry leads to an off-dry medium body of tangy raisins and citrus marmalade, bittersweet chocolate, and mild spice flavors. It finishes with a long nutty, fruity fade. Imperial Red is brewed with Crystal, Chocolate, Munich and two-row Pale Malts; Palisade and Aroma Crystal hops, Pacman Yeast, and Free Range Coastal Waters. Measurements: 20 degrees Plato, 75 IBUs, 77 Appaprant Attentuation, 57 degrees Lovibond, 9% ABV.

Draught at Ushitora in Tokyo. Clear, deep red with a wispy tan head. Hoppy aroma with plenty of fruit led by refreshing citrus.. Rather hop filled flavor. Some caramel, bitter hops, a touch of pine. The finish has some alcohol and bitterness. Very pleasent body. Hop filled and refreshing, this is a fine brew.

I was nonplussed. Pretty imbalanced in my view - the malts taste raw and the hops are overpowered by it. Not even in the top ten reds I can name.

On tap at Rogue Public House in San Fran. There was really nothing red about this, as far as I can tell, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I wanted to get the imperial porter next, but they were out. Ah well.

Bottle. Yes, as others have said, typically Rogue. Ridiculously overpriced, but very tasty. Aroma has sweet malts, along with caramel and fruit. Body is reddish, the head is moderately large off-white. Flavor smacks you with caramel, alcohol, a little chocolate and spiciness. Long spicy finish.

Why does Rogue put these average beers in outrageously expensive packaging? The black ceramic swing-top bottle is cool, but the contents just aren’t worth $20. Looks fairly standard, transparent, hazy amber, reddish brown with a frothy, lacing beige head. Aroma is very strong, powerful almost like a barleywine. Dark, chewy bread grains, sweet caramel and cookie dough with pine resin, grapefruits, lemon zest. Flavor is similar, very grainy and bready and that unique taste their Pacman yeast leaves behind. A strong bitterness envelopes the palate and hides a dry finish. Nice and drinkable but not a deal by any standard.

Pours a murky brown/red with tannish head. Aroma is earthy malt and caramel. Sweetish, earthy tones and some alcohol. Heavy on the palate.

Ceramic bottle. Pours hazy red with a thin head. Aroma is sweet malt, caramel and hops. Flavor is brown sugar, sweet malt, hoppy bitterness. Decent beer, but overpriced. Maybe they should put it and all of their other Imperials in a normal bottle and charge what they are worth.

750ml ceramic bottle. Pours copper in color with brown head. Aroma caramal and roasted malt. Taste roasted malt, brown suger and chocolate with bitter finish.
