Commercial Description:
The recipe comes from Rogue’s Eugene City Brewery and is being produced in Newport for distribution initially in kegs only to JLS accounts. A 750-ml ceramic swing-top bottle will be released in 2008, along with draft. Deep copper chestnut color with toffee, brown sugar, nuts, and spice aromas. A rich supple entry leads to an off-dry medium body of tangy raisins and citrus marmalade, bittersweet chocolate, and mild spice flavors. It finishes with a long nutty, fruity fade. Imperial Red is brewed with Crystal, Chocolate, Munich and two-row Pale Malts; Palisade and Aroma Crystal hops, Pacman Yeast, and Free Range Coastal Waters. Measurements: 20 degrees Plato, 75 IBUs, 77 Appaprant Attentuation, 57 degrees Lovibond, 9% ABV.

Pours a reddish-brown with a lingering tan head similar to much darker stouts. Most typical reds have a light fluffy white head. I took a whiff from the 750mL ceramic bottle and was greeted by chocolate malt. After the pour into my goblet though the nose was all malt and a tinge of alcohol. The mouthfeel is a bit of light carbonation. The taste is a malty red on steroids, truly imperial with some alcohol in the finish. I don’t know where the chocolate malt went, it gets lost somewhere. Overpriced unfortunately like all the XS line of Rogue, fortunately the bottles are worth saving for homebrew.

750 ml swing-top from Liquid Solutions. Aromas of roasted malt and hop. Rich ruby/mahogany color with a vigorous beige head that laced like a Belgian. Medium to full bodied with creamy carbonation. A slightly smoky roasted malt with chocolate, citrus and spice. Tobacco? There’s a lot of flavor in this one. The finish is not all that balanced, but there’s a lot of bitter trying to hold back a lot of malt. Interesting contest. Note: The swing-top was weirdly disfunctional - wouldn’t seal - wires seemed the wrong lengths.

On draught at Breakwater Brewing in Oceanside. This beer pours a deep red color with a medium beige head that recedes slowly. Patchy lacing. Floral hops and malt in the nose, along with some spiced undertones. Medium body with flavors of sweet malt and caramel, dark fruit and hops. The finish is malty and fruity, with a somewhat hoppy aftertaste that lingers a bit. Pretty good overall.

On tap at hamiltons. Pours with a deep brown-red body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. It’s sweet and malty with a floral hop note and a note of dark fruit. Full bodied, chewy and warming.

Bottled at Stockholm Beer Festival 2008. A hazy red beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt and caramel as well as lighter notes of alcohol and fruit. The flavor is sweet malty with notes of malt, caramel, fruit, and alcohol, the latter leaving a burn, leading to the dry bitter finish, where the fruity notes carries thru.

Bottle: Poured a deep hazy copper color ale with a good size foamy head with good retention and great lacing. Aroma consists of big caramel malt notes with some slightly bitter notes also discernable. Taste is also a mix between some big caramel malt with some slightly dry bitter hops at the end. I was expecting a hop bomb since the bottle is relatively fresh but all I got was a big malt bomb (not that this is a bad thing I just wasn’t expecting it). Full body with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well done.
