1997 Vintage bottle--It Must get better with age!!!! You can really taste the roasted malt. It almost tastes burnt. Very thick and dark in appearance and the aroma will light up any room. It only comes in a 7oz bottle in the year so if u can get get it enjoy it slowly and savor the taste. u will be hard pressed to find this fine stout twice.

UPDATED: NOV 23, 2007 Thick black like motor oil...very roasted/burnt malt taste. I enjoyed the 1997 vintage with Kevbo last night. This beer is definitely worth seeking out if you can find it.
Re-rate of 1996 bottle is evident in overall score of the beer.

Enticing aroma of liquorice and bitter coffee. Black as tar, zero head. Tastes of pontefrat cakes and coffee. Fantastically bitter. Oily, thick, bitter, virtually no carbonation. An amazing Imperial Stout!

UPDATED: APR 4, 2003 2001 12oz Bottle: This one pours a thick, viscous jet black color with a medium sized, dark tan head that lingers. The aroma is full of malts and hops with hints of chocolate, licorice, and alcohol. Thick and very rich in flavor, the mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. The flavor contains chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol, and hops. The finish is sweet at first but then a little bit of hop bitterness kicks in. Oh baby, this is one fine Imperial Stout, and one of my favorite Rogue ales.

Im not really sure about this one. Loads of bakers chocolat in the nose with hardly any head to speak of. Thick to the point were it coated the glass and left arcane sympols of laceing over the top of the brew. Mean while, behind a monolith of stale cold espresso and wet dog, cassis, burnt cherry, and rye bread dance on top of a bakers chocolate bitterness around an alcohol fueled bonfire in a pagan ritual that leaves a slight saltiness in your mouth and a question of WTF just happened on your lips.

12 oz. bottle. Wow, this is viscous stuff, I thought it was going to get stuck on its way into the glass. I definitely agree
with the motor oil analogies. A rough pour yielded a tiny bit of dark tan foam, which actually stuck around for a while. This looks spectacular. The aroma is complex, although not as intense as I expected: molasses, rum-soaked raisins, light alcohol, and a creaminess not unlike Baileyís. This stuff coats the lips like whole chocolate milk...thatís high gravity! I can definitely pick up some chocolate malt flavors, but the hyper-hopping screams for my attention instead. This is why Iíve stayed away from Old Crustacean up to this point. It does become more expressive near room temperature, which is a plus. I really want to like this, and I know that it is well-crafted, but it simply lacks the balance Iím looking for in an Imperial. Old Rasputin beats this one hands down. Still, I think I might tuck a few of these away for a while, and see what develops.

(Bottled in 1996) I have had this beer for a long time in my cellar, waiting for the right time to drink. I was worried about oxidation, but everything is fine. This beer is from the now defunct XS series Rogue once made. The beer is pitch black, with a lasting brown head. The nose is pure chocolate fudge brownies soaked in rum. The palate does seem light for a beer that is 26 degrees plato, but maybe age is a factor. The carbonation level is very low. The serving temperature of this Imperial is around 50 degrees. The palate is very malty. It seems that the 87.5 IBUs have diminished over time. I get a lot of acidity and cherry flavors as the beer starts to warm. Wow, this brew is very much like coffee. The alcohol is very well hidden, almost undetectable. The finish is stick sweet with molasses and chocolate. After 6 years in the bottle this Imperial Stout is excellent.

The motor oil comment is right on. The blackest, thickest drinkable fluid Iíve ever seen, with a very thin but stable medium-brown head. On the nose, roasty, espresso, and lots of alcohol. Bit too intense if you ask me, and I love a big aroma. Flavor big, too, especially on the hops, which is a welcome difference from the Bells Expedition I had last night (though I liked that one more). As the Old Crustacean is the hoppiest barley wine Iíve had, this might be the sharpest imperial. Espresso again, acid, bitter chocolate; also like the Bells very thick and smooth on the tongue. Not completely my cup of beer, but drinkable and well above average for sure.

Kinda fizzy going down. Sort of dry and not a lot of flavor. I do think it is a good beer as far as ratings go but not my beer flavor of choice.
