Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.

This is a 2011 bottle. Pours a gloopy opaque black with a thin short lived tan head. The nose is big and robust with a solid punch of roasted malt, light espresso and a good pinch of cocoa. Some moderate sweetness in the mid palate with a mixture of espresso beans, chocolate, earthy malts, vanilla and solid dark notes. The finish is bitter and warm with a lengthy aftertaste of roasty bitterness. A smooth but intense mouthfeel completes the package. A great brew to cellar

750 ml bottle into snifter, 2012 vintage bottling. Pours dense pitch black color with a 2 finger fairly dense dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, molasses, light char, pine, herbal, floral, and roasted earthiness; with a bit of booze. Nice aromas with solid balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and earthy/pine hop notes; with good strength. Taste of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, char, molasses, light toffee, pine, floral, herbal, and roasted earthiness. Good amount of pine/roasted bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, roasted malt, toast, dark bread, char, molasses, light toffee, pine, floral, herbal, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Outstanding complexity and balance of dark/roasted malt and moderate earthy/pine hop flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick and moderately chalky/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming present after the finish. Overall this is an excellent Russian imperial stout! All around great complexity, balance, and robustness of dark/roasted malt and earthy/pine hops; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Head like the crema on good espresso, beer black black black like my soul, nice duration on the head and excellent lacing, especially considering ABV. Aroma bread, malt, dried apples and cherries, licorice, molasses, smoke, vanilla. The flavors are wow! Caramel, apple, strong vanilla, licorice, coffee, citrus peel, cinnamon. Waves across the palate as it fades to a mildly bitter/spicy finish. The body it thick and viscose, nearly syrupy, with very fine, light carbonation, but not flat. This beer is dark, with a bright center and an almost dry finish, almost like an export stout finish, remarkable!

Poured from a 7 oz 2010 bottle (opened in 2014). Deep black with reddish highlights and a small tan head. Some lacing. Rich aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malts. It seems to also have a hint of bourbon, but the bottle doesn’t indicate it. Taste is bitter dark chocolate. Full mouthfeel. Bitter finish.
