COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.

750 mL bottle. The pour is a thick oily black with a medium brown head that's a little fluffy and leaves great lacing. The aroma is a little strange for an imperial stout. The hops are throwing me. The roast is there but it's missing a lot of the good complexities. There is a light touch of licorice and just that hop presence. Not really what I'm looking for in a stout of this magnitude. The flavor is again surprisingly hoppy. This almost drinks like a cross between an imperial stout and a black IPA. The roast is there and really good. The hops are just stranger for the style, and the surrounding flavors are really light. Mostly hops and roasted malt here. The mouth feel is thick and viscousy, with a nice carbonation and a well-coating overall presence. The aftertaste is bitterly hoppy. Not among the good ones here ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Aroma is somewhat hoppy, cocoa, coffee. Appearance is black, brown head. Taste is hops, licorice, roasted malt, somewhat disappointingly light. Mouthfeel is damn thick, great carbonation. Overall...very disappointing for what I expected.

Transfer from BA review on 5-22-12 - Poured from 7 oz bottle into snifter Appearance – Pours a deep black color with a large brown head. Tiny carbonating bubbles created a thick head overall that had wonderful retention with very slowly faded to leave a wonderful level of lacing. Smell – The aroma is actually kind of light. There is a dark bread and chocolate flavor that are the base. These are mixed with some vanilla sweetness as well as aromas of espresso, caramel and some bourbon aromas. Taste – The taste is big and malty up front. A dark bread flavor meets the tongue. It is mixed with some roasty cocoa flavors and an ever so light caramel sweetness. The caramel sweetness fades and gives way to a light vanilla flavor. Soon after this a nice big roasted espresso flavor rolls into the taste. These tastes all last to the end where they mix with a lighter alcohol flavor that leaves a roasty warming flavor on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is on the creamier side with a slightly lower level of carbonation. These are good for the more bitter-dry flavors of the brew and really complement the nice roasty and boozy flavors that linger on the tongue. Overall – A nice drier imperial, although not the best out there. While it could use a touch more sweetness and the aroma is a little lacking is does have some nice flavors and is well worth a try.

75cl bottle served in a Struise glass. Pours pitch black with a dark tan head. Hardly any carbonation with a short lived head. Aroma is strong and powerful burnt malt, licorice and sweetness. Taste is upfront dark chocolate, sweet malts and a huge bitterness. Very much a sipper and one to savour.

2011 bottle shared with the dorks. Aroma is heavy licorice, dark chocolate, and burnt malts. Pours thick and black with a chunky brown head. Taste is licorice, molasses, and dark chocolate with a slight roast coffee finish. A perfectly executed imperial stout. Great full mouthfeel without any stickiness. Yum.

Pours black with some tan head around the edges of glass. Smells like espresso and dark wine notes, not unlike pinot noir. Tastes like coffee, dark chocolate and alcohol with a stong bitter hops finish. Mouth feel was thick and oily with little to no carbonation. Maybe I got a bad bottle. 7oz bottle in 09’, so it has been around a while. Eh
