Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.

2011 vintage. Thick black like charcoal. Thick tan head. Roasted, almost burnt. Strong. Hints of cocoa nibs. This is very good.

Shared 2012 swing-topped, 750 ml. bottle, viscously poured to a snifter showing a black/brown hue, with a bubbly layer of brownish tan head foam, and both foamy & leggy spots of lacing. The nose was heavily roasted, cocoa, caramel & treacle sweetness, and just a touch of age as soy. The taste added a pronounced, roasted, slightly resinous, and earthy bitterness that lingered, was full bodied, with soft carbonation, and pleasant, complementary warmth. Excellent.

2010 7oz Nip Bottle: Pour is murky brown with a modest khaki head into this glass - it retains on the average side , with very light spotting. The nose is rich dark fruit, and velvet cake - molasses and brow sugar. The nose is impressive. The flavor profile is faded with minerality, inherent alcohol, bittering notes, with char, cocoa powder - it’s just a plateau . Well - the bottle did say to wait a year to drink... not 6....

Bottle, vintage 2006, sampled February 6, 2016. Pitch black with beige head. Aroma of cocoa, chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Sweet malty flavour with a malty, bitter finish.

750 ml bottle poured at home. Pours jet black with almost no head. Smell is hard to place smell but there is a bit of chocolate and something strong I can’t place. Leather comes to mind but that’s not it. This is quite strong and has a slight bitter finish. I think this confirms that I don’t love imperial stouts.

This is a stout. One that is a little bitter... Frankly I don?t have much to say about it, maybe if it was more than 7 oz I would... This was bottled in 2010 and it is now 2016 but it says best when aged for one year, so maybe that’s got something to do with it...

A perfectly executed stout. This one has been aging for 6 years, so the hops have mellowed. Very very roasty and the remnants of the hops marry into the harshness of the Dark malts very well. This is the oldest beer I’ve ever drank....

On tap, poured into a snifter. The aroma is smoke and ash with undertones of caramel and coffee. The beer is dark and opaque with a tan, dense head that leaves a moderate ring retention and mild lace. The taste is a medium high / high bitter and a medium sweet. The texture is thick with a light fizz carbonation. The medium body is flavored with smoke, ash, dark chocolate, and wood and finishes with a mostly dark chocolate syrup flavor and a clean wood ash and leather combination . The aftertaste is a dry tobacco smoke that turns to bitter coffee with a mild metallic tinge.

2014 edition- 10% abv. Appearance is jet black, with a tan, foamy clingy head. Aroma- loads of chocolate, cocoa, vanilla, leather, burnt toast, massive roasty malt, espresso coffee, dark fruit and liquorice hints. Bit of treacle toffee in there as well. Taste- bitter coffee, chocolate fudge cake, roasty toasty malt, coconut and vanilla undertones, molasses, thick chocolate milkshake, dark cooking chocolate. Mouthfeel is full and thick, almost chewy. The finish is almost sweet. Superb stout.
