COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.

Body is medium to full, texture is creamy, carbonation is soft. [20090818]

75 cL ceramic bottle. Pours pitch black with a creamy chocolate brown head. Aroma is hard roasted malt, light hoppy fruity and chocolate dense. Flavour starts solid roasted malty with a distinct acidic note, light chalky too. Bitter and slowly going into a mild marmelade sweet and hops fruity finish. Main impression in the finish however is bitterness and a lingering hardroasted malt acidity. Quite intense yet also nicely smoothend.

A black beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of coffee, chocolate, as well as roasted malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of coffee and chocolate, as well as light touches of the alcohol. The mouthfeel is smooth, yet the alcohol prickles the tongue. Nice one.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2007 (Bottle 35, 5 cl) Pours a tar like opaque blackness with a creamy, light brown head. Burned, caramelish aroma. Markedly full-bodied with toasted malts and a distinct burned, malty finish. A huge beer. 270106 and 240307

Bottled. Black opaque colour, mediumsized brown head. Alcohol, hops, chocolate and coffee in aroma. Roasted malt, sweet sugar, chocolate, coffee, caramel in flavour. Also some very sweet hints. Long caramellish malty and hoppy (!) aftertaste with hints of licorace. Full bodied and wellbalanced.

UPDATED: MAR 12, 2008 Bottled (2001 edition). Once the ketchup effect let me shake the beer out of the bottle it comes out black hole black with near black head. Licorice and coffee aroma. It has chocolate mousse mouthfeel andtastes like molasses. Still it’s dry and very salty, has some grapepfruit hoppiness to it, and manages to stay at least decently balanced, despite a bitterness that must be way over 50 IBUs. This beer is HUGE!, and also really good.

26th August 2008. Starts off smooth, silky with a little chocolate but then the bitterish coffee blooms and dominates. Good but has too rough an edge to be one of the great RISs. My bottle says 11.0% abv.

Black color; poor head. Strange aroma: alcohol, malt, roasted malt, Porto wine, liquorice; dry. Smooth; loads of roasted malt and caramel, with coffee, liquorice… Strong bitter final. Extremely powerful.
