Commercial Description:
Deserving the title "Emperor of Ales" (unlike the bourgeois "King of Beers"), Imperial is the strongest and fullest of all stouts. Imperials originally were brewed with large quantities of hops and a high alcohol content to withstand long, unrefrigerated journeys. Rogue Imperial Stout, considered the high end of stouts, is made of 2-row Great Western Harrington & Klages, Hugh Baird XLT-80, Black, Munich and Chocolate Malts; Willamette, Cascade and Chinook hops; rolled oats; and two secret ingredients. Unfiltered and unfined, Imperial Stout is best when aged for one year. Imperial Stout is available in a new 12-ounce bottle (replacing the older 7-ounce XS-line package) and on draft.
Measurements: 26 degrees Plato, IBU 87.5, Apparent Attenuation 77, Lovibond 258

Thick black like motor oil...very roasted/burnt malt taste. I enjoyed the 1997 vintage with Kevbo last night. This beer is definitely worth seeking out if you can find it. Re-rate of 1996 bottle is evident in overall score of the beer.

(Ceramic flip-top bottle from 2007) Pours like motor oil dark black and thick; clings to the sides of the glass with a deep yellow/brown tint. if you work at it it has a brown head, but i enjoyed this with a very slow pour into a snifter and almost no head. when i poured with a head, the lacing was thick and clingy, sticking to the sides for the duration of the glass. lots of coffee and chocolate in the taste, and great chewy mouth-feel. bitter, hoppy finish, and a lingering presence of alcohol. a wonderful example of an imperial stout, and a delight to drink. share this one with friends and a cigar.

An absurdly fine stout -- full of depth, flavor and finish. I’m drinking the 2001 "vintage" as I compose this review -- I was lucky enough to find a 24 bottle box of it in the cooler back at Philips Fine Wines (itself worth a detour to Stockton NJ, if you ever find yourself halfway between NYC and Phila.). Frankly, great value for money, and just flat out delicious. I’ll spare you the standard "hints of nutmeg and blackberry" RateBeer Poser BS (this is a BEER -- if you’re looking for fruit and spices, go to a grocery store and buy some!). In any event, all the relevant details you can get from the "Commercial Description" above. This stout is absolutely the Real Deal.

These are damn good. You don’t even need to eat food if you drink a few of these. One of these is like a thick hefty meal. Excellent bite and lasting dimensions of flavor. Chocolate, coffee, and alcohol, a perfect blend. This shit coats your mouth and throat. Excellent.
