fiulijn (7150), Como; Lausanne (CH); Malmö (SWE), Italy Aug 5, 2009 Beautiful amber color, big head, not persistent, leaving an irregular lace. The aroma is a nice combination of British Bitter (British yeast, earthy), and American hops (fruity). It has a very good caramel flavor, for once not sweet, and of course a very strong hopping, resiny and fruity, with bitter oranges. Some sweetness comes to the surface in the end, making the final more interesting, waves of intense bitterness and sweetness. Very good. cprochak (388), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 27, 2009 On tap at the brewery on 6/28/09. Pours light brown with beautiful lacing. Nice bitter citrus aroma, which only barely carries over to the flavor. Alcohol is hidden well, but not too complex of a beer. Definitely solid for what it is intended to be. Cybercat (778), Georgia, USA Jul 12, 2009 Comes out of the tap a rich clear reddish copper with a not very thick but fine-bubbled head. Malty aroma has undertone of cinnamon. Rich, malty, spicy and lively flavor has a hint of hops and a firm cinnamon undertone. Texture is lively, fizzy and edgy, leaving a spicy finish. Vertical Bacon Strips (874), Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Jul 11, 2009 Poured out a very thin white cap that hangs out on the rims, some messy lacing. Brew is burnt orange / copper, maybe a bit of red. The aroma is interesting enough - mild, dusty, apricot, very flowery, biscuit, almost raspberry. The taste is ok but a bit disappointing - however, there is something different here, biscuit, some flowery and herbal hops to go along with very stiff bitterness, a touch of alcohol. The mouth feel is decent, fairly smooth, nice long lasting bitterness, medium to medium full bodied. A good beer but pretty much forgetable. Rustyham (552), miami, Florida, USA Jul 3, 2009 Cloudy glowing orange color, aroma of maple syrup and peaches. Chewy, malty, and bitter as all hell. Not as caustic as the 90 minute, but definitely more pleasurable. $20 bottle at Stop and Shop in Coral Gables Cletus (5002), Connecticut, USA Jun 26, 2009 Pours amber with a thin off white head. Smells of sweet caramel, roses, some spice. Tastes sweet and fruity with some earthy peppery splashes on the finish. cmonster (74), Portland, Oregon, USA Jun 20, 2009 Ceramic 750 poured into a snifter. Dark amber-orange in color. Short off-white head. Aroma of sweet malt and a little spice and even some ripe banana. Flavor is full of malt and bitterness. Little carbonation. Full body. Thick and creamy texture. Sticky, bitter finish. Says 7.4% ABV but seems like more. Half-way between a barleywine and a double IPA. astrofrk (218), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jun 14, 2009 Amber-Orange. Medium, peach head.
Aroma: Caramel, grapefruit.
Flavor: Grapefruit, caramel, pine. Bitter finish.
So, defining a type of beer is sort of like defining what a planet is (I am an avid astronomer) and the more I learn, the less I know. If we were to call this an ESB, it would be near the top of the list.
The term; "Strong Ale" only exists due to alcahol volume and one should question whether the term should exist at all as it covers so many styles. I feel this is an ESB.
