Review from notes at World of Beer - Fort Myers on 11/3/11. Poured on draft into a shaker pint glass. Appearance: Pours a dark nutty brown with a 1 finger light tan head. Excellent lacing. Smell: Hazelnut and fall spices. Smells like an autumn beer. Taste: Fall spices up front followed by a touch of bitter hops in the middle before ending with sweet hazelnut at the finish. Aftertaste is bittersweet with hazelnut dominating. I didn’t detect any rum whatsoever. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Drinkability: Good drinkability. Very smooth. Overall: Good beer overall. While I didn’t catch any of the rum notes I expected, I still really enjoyed this one. Give it a try.

Continuing my tour of Rogue beers....nice pour, smells great, carbonation a little weak, dark brown/amber. Not at all really what I expected, tasted sort of like an imperial red, more than a brown ale, hazelnut definitely comes through, actually very sweet, almost like there is some berry in it, or some floral/citrus hops, all in all not bad, doesn’t come together to make it awesome, but still solid, glad I tried it, I’ll probably leave it at that. Not one of my favs from Rogue.

Dark brown. Big bubbly head that dies fast. Big, bready aroma - like delicious dark German bread. Very malty, classic bock-like flavor that gives way to a huge toasty-nutty finish. Finish is definitely the best part of this beer. No real hops coming through. I like this, but I kind of want a bit more body and chewiness.

Poured from a 22 oz. Amber brown with a ¼ inch off-white head with light lacing. Aroma is of apple & spice. Taste is similar to the aroma with a hint of hazelnut in the finish. It would be a good fall beer. It’s yummy. The beer is well balanced since it was aged in the rum barrels, unlike other browns’ I’ve had. High drinkability. I will buy again! Overall a wicked good beer. Shared with my beer buddy AirForceHops... of course!

Very dark copper with thick tan head. Nice hazelnut aroma. Hazelnut flavor with slight bitterness at the end. Kind of a slick mouth feel with lots of carbonation.

My favorite of the John John series. Smells of nutty coffee and light spices. Flavor is mild dried dark fruits and oak over top of the Dead Guy profile. Texture to this one is a little too prickly, though. Does not age well, however. Had a year-old bottle that got lost in the cellar - nose was burning styrofoam, flavor had lost it’s brightness and begun to show serious oxidation signs.

Cloudy brown. Solid, if a little boring. Clean taste, very subtle hazelnut. Slightly sweet.

22oz bottle. Pours dark brown with amber hue in the light; small foamy head leaves a yellowish-tan halo that lasts. Aroma is buttery chocolate, hazelnut, booze. Flavor is a mess but is definitely influenced by the rum barrels; mostly sweet with a sour finish.

Pours a very dark amber color with a small white head. Intriguing nose, sweet and matly. Initial taste was different, but not that good, but as the beer warmed, I started to enjoy it a lot more. I couldn’t really put my finger on what I liked about this beer, but it is very enjoyable in small ammounts. I know I couldn’t have more than a glass of this, glad it was shared.

This poured a caramel color with no head. I was a little disappointed. It was a nutty, sweet brown ale, and on that score I have no complaints. Nice sweet malts and nutty flavors - and obviously hazelnut. However, there really was almost no discernable wood at all in the arom or flavor, and the spiced notes barely came through once it got really warm, but by that point it was a little overly sweet.
