First rating 2002-02-25: Brown-black. Coffee and grape aroma. Bitter, but a bit on the thin side. At least that is what I have written in my notes, but after reading others note on this I guess I should get back and re-rate it. (7/10 5/10 3/5 4/5 11/20)
Re-rate 2002-10-25: Funny, I’d all forgotten this rating, but came to nearly exactly the same conclusion. Almost black with rich head. Light coffee nose. Some crystal malt profile. Rather sweet.

Coffee, chocolate aroma. Deep brown, trace of red, billowy cloud of cappuccinno coloured head. Lace for days! Mild chocolate, coffee and roasted malt flavour, excellent bitterness, with a hint of liquorice. Texture of chocolate/coffee pudding. A very good Porter.

The name certainly let me know it was coming, but there is just too much coffee flavor in this. It is very nicely hopped and has some nice chocolate undertones. Its on the watery side and doesnt realy live up to the light cream finish that it promises. Overall a decent beer, but I doubt if I will be back for another... if I were a big coffee drinker I would probably have a different opinion.

The best thing about this beer is the wonderful mix of hops and the espresso malt. I have found that most espresso infused brews like to counterbalance with predominantly malty flavors, Rogue yet again adds to the list of originality by taking this mocha porter to an extremely bitter realm. Although I respect this seemingly rare blend, I rather like malty porters. So, in complete oppisition to my own sentiment I am giving this a less than amazing rating. "Less than amazing," meaning that this is still very good. This beer is incredibly dark in appearance, mildly dark in character. The bitterness kind of rolls off the tongue as the modest malt presence fades into a slightly watery finish. Bold in taste, lacking in body and palate appeal.

Wow! A very big beer....this beer embodies everything that I like about Rogue....a full, flavorful beer...malts balanced perfectly with a pleasant hop finish....looked great too!

pours brownish black with the kind of exploding head I’d expect from a hefe-weizen rather than a porter. as the name suggests there is lots of chocolate and coffee in the aroma, aswell as some perfumy hops. more mocha in the flavour, lots of roastiness. some slight sweet caramel notes too. roasty, citrusy hop finish lingers for awhile. quite nice.

UPDATED: DEC 3, 2006 Mountainous, sticky, and tan foam atop a translucent dark ruby colored liquid. Interesting citric, floral, roasted, caramel, grape, soil, and mocha interplay in the aroma. Extremely hoppy aroma. Also smells a bit airy and phenolic. Light/watery and spritzy palate. However, when the sludge on the bottom is added it imparts more velvety feel and a bit of vanilla. Flavors of chocolate dipped oranges and roasty/grainy feel. Salty bitterness, bitter chocolate, and some charcoal in the finish. Palate is overly carbonated and watery, which detracts from thorough enjoyment. What in the heck is that one inch slimy sludge on the bottom? Chocolate, hops, or yeast? Or all of the above? All I know is that I love it and recommend dumping it in as well!

Black color, medium head. Mildly hoppy, medium malts. Deeply roasted malts. Full flavor, mild taste. Mocha flavor evident. Finish is smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

While recognizing that this style will be a bit thinner than you’d expect for a dark beer, the mouthfeel on my sample was positively watery. Not much flavor until the middle, where a suddenly rich chocolate flavor strikes as a surprise. Too jarring, I think, possibly because the rest of the flavor profile fails to hold up its end.
