UPDATED: SEP 11, 2009 On tap at Kahootz, listed as Rogue’s "John’s Locker Stock"... apparently a random brew directly from the brewery. I’m pretty sure the waitress called it Mogul Madness, not Mogul Ale. Very nice brew... darkish, spicy hops, not much bitterness. Nice head and lacing. Maybe just a bit astringent on the finish. Overall very good.

Draft@ Issaquah Brewhouse. Some of you Old Skool craft brew drinkers may remember the awesome Mogul Madness these guys bottled back some 10-15 years ago; a roasty, Cascade hopped Porter similar to 3Floyds Christmas brew, that, this beer is not... Pours hazy copper with a tan head. Fresh floral hop aroma with some caramel malt sweetness. Medium body. Flavor is burnt caramel with lots of hop bitterness, not really any flavors just lots of bitterness, like too many of Rogues American Strong Ales seem to be these days. Disappointing.

On tap at Sanctuary. Very full aroma filled with hops and good variety of them (makes sense given what was put into it). The most prominent aroma notes were citrus and an earthy herbal. Some fairly strong mild fruits in the aroma as well. Pretty decent pour with a small creamy thick bubble head, nice retention with some scattered lacing, medium body in appearance and dark ruby grapefruit in color. Grapefruit and other heavy citrus notes are also players in the flavor. Also, earth, melon fruit, heavier mild fruits, and caramel cereal grains. Well balanced, and a good medium body and full flavored feel. A quite enjoyable JLS. A beer that I wouldn’t have minded drinking all night.

On tap at the Sanctuary in Iowa City. Pours a dark, but clear brown body with a thick, dense and creamy, dirty tan colored head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma is cookie malts and hops. Some soft toasted toffees, cocoa, and earth. The hops give off mostly a citrus. Flavor is pretty nice. Soft bready malts, toasted toffee, light roasted grains, and more noticeable citrus hops and chocolate. Creamy, medium to full body. Somewhat grainy in the finish with a modest earthy lingering taste. Overall, a nice, full flavored beer. Good one.

On tap at Sanctuary. Very nice. A fairly dark beer, lots of hops in the nose. Creamy body, full roasted malt flavor and a long, dry, bitter finish.

On tap at El Bait Shop. Pours a deep red color with a medium head and great lace. The aroma is caramel up front with some fruity hops. The flavor is very bitter with a mild roastiness producing a coffee flavor not normally seen in a beer or this character. This has a nice little fruitiness but it just gets absolutley choked by bitterness.

GAManiac (1944) - Atlanta, Georgia, USA - MAR 27, 2009
On tap at the Brick Store. Pours a deep clear copper with a big tan head that clings to the side of the glass on the way down, leaving pretty good lacing. The aroma was heavy on the caramel malts with some decent earthy hops coming through but not dominating. The taste is a bit hoppier than the aroma with lots of spicy, earthy hops on top of the massive caramel malt backbone. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with good carbonation and has lots of hop stickiness that lingers on the palate. This is a decent, well-balanced ale that doesn’t stand out in any way but certainly goes down easy.
