DrGonzo (625), Somerville, Massachusetts, USA Feb 22, 2006 Tap. Dark red with brown tints. Very hoppy aroma, earthy with pine, hints of citrus and lemon. Even with the hyper-hopping, this is a fairly well-balanced beer, with a chewy malt body. Big, yet easily drinkable and unique enough compared to Rogue beers of a similar style.
nqualls (422), Tennessee, USA Aug 27, 2008 22 oz bomber poured into a tulip glass. Poured a dark mahogany color with a creamy tan head. Aroma of citrus hops and malt. Flavor was grapefruit and some sweet malt. Good beer. zach8270 (1421), Henrietta, New York, USA Mar 16, 2008 (draft @ The Old Toad - Rochester, NY) A dark, hoppy ale? That I had to try. Very dark in color with a thick tan head. Aroma had a lot going on. Lots of floral hop notes, sweet and caramel malts, and some resin. Flavor had a lot going too. Lots of citrus and floral hops at the beginning with a smooth and sweet malty middle and some fruity sweetness and resin notes at the end. Finishes rather clean. Quite nice. bbp182 (254), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Mar 15, 2008 Look - Dark, very dark amber. Almost black. Thick creamy head.
Smell - Very complex in smell. I smell something new everytime I smell it. Malty, bitter hop smell. Grapefruity/Piney hop smell. Pretty good.
Taste - Complex as hell. Very bitter, grapefruit bitter. Fruity/piney. Amazing. Malty also. Great balance. iowaherkeye (1413), relocated to Santa Rosa f/Iowa, California, USA Mar 13, 2008 On tap at The Sanctuary. Pours a clear reddish brown with a one finger creamy beige head, fading to a film after a couple minutes. Aroma of bitter citrus--grapefruit rinds to be precise--with some scorched caramel notes. Besides a little raisin, there isn’t much else. Lots of bitterness up front in the flavor with all of the aforementioned aromas, though there is an added dry woody note. Even the sweet notes seem bitter--bittersweet! Dry finish with unbalanced bitterness peaking at a 7-8. Medium full body with moderate carbonation. Pretty good, but almost no balance and not much for complexity. pepsican (766), the beer wastelands of, Iowa, USA Feb 24, 2008 Tap at the sanctuary. Pours a dark brownish red with a thin tan head. Strong hop and malt aroma, some biscuit and grapefruilt. Flavor is similar, kind of jumbled. Very bitter and underbalanced. Could use a few weeks to settle down a bit and it would be great.
